No, the beach is not gross. We live next door and are there all the time also there is a couple of awesome kids' museums - Brooklyn Children's museum and New York Hall of Science in Queens. The place in Queens has real rockets and is next to a huge park!

I have a soft spot in my heart for coney island too!! I wouldnt say the beach is "gross" albeit a little crowded. And the rides and games are so fun. Also the aquarium is there but you'd have to check if its fully open post-sandy damage.

The bronx zoo is great too! But the heat has been brutal in nyc the last few days so i'd keep an eye on the forecast.

What about the aircraft carrier, gosh I can't think of the name of it right now, where the space shuttle is?

If you're going to be in or closer to queens, they have a smaller/less crowded flea market and food vendor thing in long island city. I personally think smorgasburg is a nightmare.

@locavore_mama: smorgasburg is fun...but can get crazy crowded, especially if the weather is nice. If the older kids can be patient, then I think it would be fine with them...will your DH be with you? If so, someone can take your LO and any other kids who are bored to the park that is directly across from smorgasburg--it's a little toddler park with a slide and some climbing things. Smorgasburg is quite the experience though, especially for a foodie like you! Just bring cash

ETA I think if you got to smorgasburg right as it opened you would be fine--we've always gone later, around 1 or 2, and it's kind of a madhouse at that point.

And I agree that the water lab can get crowded, but if you do that then smorgasburg you'll probably be fine. And then after smorgasburg you could do one of the other playgrounds right there (the sandbox, the swings) or just sit on the grass and kick a ball around.
