So we're venturing into the possibility of getting a minivan to accommodate our growing family. DH has an SUV but I have a small sedan. We're thinking of trading in my car for a minivan. So ..... would you go for the higher resell ability of the Honda Odyssey or the AWD feature of the Toyota Sienna?

Where do you live? Do you need AWD? I have heard the Sienna's are pig's on fuel and the AWD wouldn't help that, I think re-sale on both are good, and you likely can't go wrong with either! I am near counting down the days until I can get the Odyssey!

My brother has had both and traded Odyssey for the sienna. Both drive like a dream.
In our region awd is non negotiable.

FIL had both and everyone agreed they liked the Odyssey better, although they are all die hard Honda fans. So I voted Odyssey!

@beebug I live in NJ and after the brutal winter we just had, I feel like AWD would be really really important. But I'm really drawn to the Odyssey.

I don't live in your climate, but I love my Odyssey. However if I did live in you climate, I would go for AWD.. To me they are really comparable cars, but the Odyssey is more attractive IMO..

they are both great cars! if the awd tips the scale for you, then go for that!

I LOVE my odyssey. I'm obsessed. We chose it because it has more latch/tether points, but awd isn't a huge deal here. I would probably go for the sienna if we lived any farther north.

Our Sienna is a amazing, but I truly don't think you can go wrong with the Odyssey or Sienna. They're both dream "mom" cars, have good resale value, and are so, so functional for families. As DH said after we got our van, "I never thought a car could change your life, but this one totally did!"

Not a minivan owner, but another vote for the Town and Country. We had a rental on vacation and DH {a total car snob} was so impressed, and dare I say smitten.

i wish there were more AWD options! that really is frustrating. though, i've heard many people with odysseys say they handle well in the snow even without AWD. i like the style of the odyssey better. i've never driven an AWD sienna, but maybe look into how that part is reviewed, not all AWD is created equal, i have an AWD pacifica with brand new highly rated tires that is worse in the snow that my husband's old corolla with crap tires. could an odyssey with snow tires be comparable? not sure. i have a fantasy that they will come out with an AWD, hybrid, stylish, reliable minivan (oh course it would also be affordable, this is a fantasy
i need better fantasies

I love the Toyota Sienna!! I test drove both but the Honda had a plasticy feel while the Toyota felt super nice and high quality. I don't think you can go wrong with either though.
I will mention this, minivans lose their value quickly so if I were to buy one it would have to be a solid, long term decision (owning it for 5-10 years).

We're considering the same.... Except I like the look of the Town&Country better than both. I've heard great things from owners of all three. Any thoughts on the Dodge Caravan? The look and perks of the T&C, but at a fraction of the price...

@HLK208: Odysseus hold their value really well. We ended up buying new over used because the price difference was less than 5k for every van we looked at. We were looking at 2010+.

Sienna if the AWD is important. We have a Sienna and love it. DH drives it and he was actually the one who really wanted the minivan, I didn't care much but it has been really awesome. I wish there were more AWD choices too.

I have an odyssey in pa and I love it. I didn't have any problem driving in all the snow we had this year in the ody. We got a 2006 touring exition with 40k miles for about $18k! Deal of the year if you ask me.
I rented a town and country this year and hated it. It drives like a box on wheels compared to the odyssey.

@BunnylovesbearThey are discontinuing the Town & Country as of 2014 so I didn't even consider it an option. If for whatever reason we needed parts or repairs, it's such a hassle for cars that are discontinued. That's why we chose to pick between the Odyssey or Sienna.

We test drove both the Odyssey and Sienna and while I don't think you can go wrong with either, we loved the Odyssey a little more. We don't live in an area that requires AWD though, so if that's needed in your area, I'd go with the Sienna.

@bunnylovesbear: No, from what I read, I think they discontinued the T&C because it was too similar to the Caravan.
