No I can't think of anything. I started the Cohen post and while I know what it means, and therefore wouldn't use it I just assume those who use it don't know. the ones who used it aren't around a high (zero) Jewish population.
I can't think of any Christian names that would be taboo? Judas? I can't speak for other religions/cultures.

I can think more of historical figures whose names would be insensitive or offensive to use- like I'd be really surprised by someone using the name adolf or something. Can't think of anything Christian related, though I guess lucifer wouldn't great (@Torchwood: )

I knew a kid named Adolf growing up. I did always wonder why his parents named him that...

@LibbyLou: I'd add Jezebel in there too. I personally wouldn't use Delilah only because she wasn't very nice, but I think it's a cute name if it didn't have the negative connotation.

I've kind of wondered about using names that are obviously specific to ones culture/religion if that person is not of that religion/culture? For instance, a white person using a name that isn't really used for a white person? Is that offensive? Is it offensive of me to ask that? If so, pardon my ignorance.

Same as @mrsjazz: ... There are many names I'd avoid, but not many I find offensive. I do think the SS admin in the US has a list of blacklisted names (like Hitler). People are weird.

My sister said she used to like the name Isis for a girl. Not anymore ...

Honestly, I think most names are fair games. Now, that I know Cohen from the other thread is a sacred last name and likely should not be part of the last-name-as-first-name trend I wouldn't offer it up as a suggestion for people to consider.

For a long time I wanted to name a daughter Luciana nn Lucky/ Lucy and a friend quickly proclaimed I'm not Italian. There are definitely people that have ideas about staying in your lane, so to speak. I'm still holding out that I will be able to use Asher, which is a Hebrew name.

There are a few names made infamous by religious text or history that I would steer clear from. I likely would not want to be left alone in a dark room with a kid named Lucifer, but that's my irrational fear.

I too think whatever you want to name your kid is fair game, that includes things like nouns, brands, religious/historical figures, etc.

I think I'd be offended by a first name of something like C-nt, or anything with a sexual connotation (use your imaginations, lol).

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I can't imagine someone Italian being offended by you naming your child an Italian name. We are all a mix here. I had a child in my class from Guatamala named Kevin and a good friend from China named Richard. I'm still struggling with this idea of offensive names. Why is any name offensive? I wouldn't name my own kid most names but how might I be offended by someone else's name?

@NavyRN2012: I've thought some names were weird or silly (ie North West) or downright mean to the child, but why would it offend ME personally?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: My husband has made some comments about using certain names because of ethnicity. For example, we both like the name Liviana, but he's worried about using it because our daughter may not "look Italian enough." I'm like, who cares?

I think a few years ago, there were parents who named their kid Adolf Hitler Smith, and a bakery refused to decorate a birthday cake for the kid.

There are definitely names I wouldn't use because of a negative connotation, either society-wide or my own personal feeling. But being offended by a name? Meh. You and your kid have to live with it (and the reaction to it), not me.

@travellingbee: @littlebug: well Luciana is a moot point now because DH vetoed it along time ago. He suggested Francesca, so we'll likely end up offending someone, somehow.

@wrkbrk: I actually know of an Isis, she's from my mom's hometown. She was named after the local theater (which is named Isis and there is a huge community debate to change the historic name now, the town is all split up over it.)

I have a cousin Koen and was never aware there was any negative cognitaion with his name, however we live in an area that has almost zero Jewish population. I'm sure my cousin doesn't know about it either. She's a teacher and would be sad to find his name could be considered offensive.

My DH actually had a great uncle named Adolf, his family is 100% German and he was born way before WWII.

I think intent could make a name offensive, but I don't think names are inherently offensive.

@Mrs. Pen: race has nothing to do with it. Cohen is, as others have outlined, considered a special name of descendants, so it is pretty obvious once knowing that why it might be considered an obnoxious first name choice for people who are not of that tradition. I don't believe it is offensive simply to take a name from another heritage or culture.
