@jennylynn: could you just tell her they didn't fit and you tried to get the same thing in a size up but they didn't have anymore?

I have to agree with, @kiddosc. MILs don't forget! Buy that outfit back. (My MIL has basically outfitted our kid with EVERYTHING for the first 6 months. lol. On one hand I don't mind... on the other, I kind of wish i got to buy some cute clothes for my own kid - but it's OK. One less thing to buy I guess!)

I would go to the store, dress her in the outfit in a fitting room (if they have one), take a picture of her in the outfit (but make sure you can't tell it's in a fitting room). If it ever comes up, mention that it's dirty but LO loves to wear it, and show her the picture.

It's a little extreme, but the best way to please everybody!

Doesn't sound like she's just going to forget about the outfit. I would go buy it back.

@jennylynn: Yeah, I'm in the buy it back camp. My mom throws a fit when she doesn't see the things she buys LO and she definitely doesn't forget.

@jennylynn: Can you suggest she buy non-clothing items going forth? Or find a way to suggest styles you do like?

@jennylynn: meh I just like the idea of telling her that it didn't fit rather than going out and buying something you don't like to appease one person. I wouldn't put that pressure on myself.

I would just buy it back, too. It's only one oufit, I doubt it will impact your LOs wardrobe that much and to keep the peace it would be worth it to me.

Going against the grain here. Don't bring it up yourself and just keep saying "next time" if she laments your LO isn't wearing her stuff. Unless your MIL insists on changing her into her outfit, thus treating your child like a toy doll, she will never know you returned the item. I realize kids clothing is for children to wear, but the parents still need to like it.
