I am looking for opinions on Ikea nursery furniture (cribs, changing tables, bookshelves, rocking chairs, etc.). If you have any of these items, which one(s) do you have, and do you like the quality? Thanks!!

I didn't buy any nursery furniture from there but I have bought other furniture from Ikea. I think if you only want the furniture to last through early childhood then Ikea would be great. But in general it's lower quality and not particularly durable in the long term. We decided we wanted the baby's furniture to stay with her for many years so we got a quality hardwood dresser and convertible crib that can grow with her.

We bought a crib and I think it's nice enough looking. Haven't used it yet, but my other furniture from Ikea has lasted forever so I'm not concerned about quality--a crib only gets used for a few years and I think it would be tough for a tiny person to tear up a piece of wooden furniture. Ours has 2 heights and you can take the side off to convert into a toddler bed.
*ETA* I tried out their rocking chair in store and didn't think it was comfy at all. I think I read on one of Mrs. Bee's posts that she bought one and didn't like it for nursing. I had an Ikea bookshelf in college and it was your average cheap-ish bookshelf with cardboard backing--worked for my purposes but wasn't the classiest thing ever.

I only looked at it in the store, but the cribs they had set up were really flimsy. I've heard other people say they are fine, so I really think they would put together quickly and sloppily, but they were just very loose feeling and would lean side to side if you pushed it at all. Made me nervous-- but like I said, I really do think someone did a halfa$$ job putting it together.
I have other furniture like dressers from there and have had no problems, but yeah, it's not long haul furniture in general, so depends how long you want to have it. I've had bookshelves from there that are plenty nice and sturdy (again, be careful putting them together to make sure you get everything even and tight).

My Graco Lauren crib and Target dresser/nightstand (admittedly not expensive or quality pieces) seem worse quality than the Ikea pieces we bought in the past. The first crib we ordered had a piece that was not glued together properly and was dangerous. The dresser had a problem with the sliding track mechanism and the drawers don't close well.
Ikea seems to have better quality control than some of the other budget furniture companies.

Regarding cribs, we thought the ones w/thin round posts (Gulliver, Hensvik) seemed a little flimsy like @Foodnerd81 mentioned, even though I suspect they're just fine. We got the Sundvik because the bars seemed more stable. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/childrens_ikea/18755/

We are actually making a road trip to Ikea tomorrow to look at nursery furniture! We have some great pieces from Ikea, but our only requirement is we have to see them in person first.
When I see the stuff in store some of it looks cheap, but some of it seems decent.
So, we want to just see it before we buy, but we may get our crib, dresser (also to be used as a changing table) and book/toy shelf.

We have the IKEA Sundvik crib, which seems extremely stable. We don't have LO yet, but we threw a bunch of heavy weights in it, kicked it, shook it around, and it didn't budge. I wasn't gonna let LO in there without giving it a beating first!!! I think the cribs in the store are just put together poorly, because that worried me too. I agree with @tororojo: that the ones with round posts did not seem as stable to me. Ours has flat slats.

Oh, I was gonna add that we also bought the Hopen 4-drawer dresser to use as a changing table. I've used IKEA for bookshelves, tv stand, etc and always love what I get

I looked at them in the store but didnt like the cribs. I do love other things from Ikea though
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@tororojo: Ah yes, I was definitely looking at ones with the thin round posts. I didn't see the one you got there but it does look sturdier even in the photo. Too bad, because I like the look of the Hendsvik furniture in general.

We purchased the Gulliver crib on the recommendation of Baby Bargains. We haven't used it yet but put it together and I found it to be very stable and just as solid as any other crib. All cribs sold here have to adhere to the same safety standards so the difference between a $100 and a $500 crib is, essentially, styling and $400 in my opinion.
We also purchased an Expedit for his room (laid on its side) because we've had one in our living room for three years and two houses, lasted through a move, carries a ton of books, and has never shown any signs of being less than solid. The Billy bookcase is pretty flimsy but their Expedits and more expensive cases are great.
We also have two couches from IKEA.
I'm a fan in general. I don't really love their dressers, I think they're kind of flimsy, but that's just my personal opinion and I can't really vouch for anything beyond that.

@Foodnerd81: Yeah you can't judge by the display (shame since that's really all you have to go by). DH and I put it together and it doesn't lean or shake at ALL. The thing about IKEA furniture is it's a bitch to put together, and you have to be careful, but all those pieces mean it's not going anywhere.

DD's whole room is from Ikea. Granted it's toddler furniture (toddler bed, bucket organizer, tables, stools, and lights), but we really like it. It's sturdy and has held up to over a year of use and a move two states away. We also have the Besta bookshelves in the playriom and those have held up well under similar conditions.

I have the Hemnes chest with changing table attachment. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10153790/
It has worked well for two kids. I didn't like the finish on it, so I tried sanding and painting it, which didn't work so well, but not sure if that was just my user error. Once we're done with diapers, I'll remove the changing table attachment and use it as a normal chest (after another repaint attempt).

We have a TON of Ikea furniture and have never had a problem. We might go that route for our LO since we don't know what our future, unbought home (aka apartment/condo) will have space for. It doesn't always hold up the best moving but otherwise is good!

We have a 3-year old IKEA crib (SUNDVIK) that is a hand-me down from my niece. It is plenty sturdy. We also have an IKEA changing table, which is also plenty sturdy. It's all in how you put it together.
I would prefer not to spend an arm and a leg on kids' furniture since it takes so much abuse. I know when I was a kid I took crayons to all my furniture to "make it pretty."

We have the Gulliver crib and love it. You can't go by the flimsiness in the store, probably a thousand people try to shake it on a daily basis. We've had it for 2 years and it is in great shape, even though DD jumps on it on a daily basis. You won't regret this purchase!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
They really should put them together better in the store! I can only imagine how many people are like me and turned off by the flimsy ones in the store! It would really be worth it for them to spend a little extra time on that!
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
We have the Gulliver, and it is extremely sturdy. I'm not sure why others have said it doesn't seem stable, because it seems incredibly stable to us - just as much, if not more, than the $500-$600 cribs we checked out. My husband actually stood in it, and it didn't budge! Very nice for $100!

We have the SUNDVIK crib and love it! We also have the regular HEMNES three drawer dresser as a changing table. We have the eight drawer dresser in our bedroom and plan to just use the whole set when we move out of our apt and into a house. At that point we may need more storage for the baby. I have another HEMNES dresser that has held up for almost ten years so I am pretty happy with the quality. Finally, we have the big EXPEDIT unit in LO's room but that is only because it was an office before a bedroom and we have no where else to put it all. I actually really like it for storing LO's stuff!

I am going to look for a dresser at Ikea for Baby 2!

@tororojo: @Bookworm: @sotomorrow: @JoeysMama: The Sundvik is the one I like. Did you also purchase a crib mattress from Ikea? I know sometimes standard sizes don't fit with their furniture.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
@lawbee11: I didn't/haven't. I registered for a standard one from Target, after checking the measurements of the crib + the mattress. It appears that the Sundvik at least (dunno about others) is made to fit a standard baby mattress.

We got pretty much all our nursery furniture at Ikea. Here's a post I wrote about what pieces we got:
http://www.hellobee.com/2012/10/31/furnishing-a-nursery-on-a-budget/
We just assembled everything this week, and I'm very pleased. The cribs look super cute, and they feel sturdy. I will say that when I was in the Ikea store the cribs seemed a bit less sturdy and the white ones were kind of dingy looking, so I was very relieved that they turned out so good. Just keep in mind at the store that everyone and their dirty fingers has touched them, leaned on them, etc.
The dresser we got was unfinished because I wanted to paint it and use material on the drawers (future blog post coming on this once I finish it), but the rest of the furniture we got in white.

@lawbee11: I think we are using the IKEA mattress? My sister bought a different one for her daughter and it fits just fine. It seems to be a "standard" crib size for me. Although I have limited crib exposure, ya know?
blogger / pomelo / 5361 posts
Oh, and I bought Ikea mattresses, too. Be careful which one you get, though. Some are very soft (almost feels like a sleeping bag) and have no springs. I've read it's safer to have a firmer mattresses, so we got the one with springs that felt more like a "real" mattress.

Love our Ikea nursery! Only issue we had was the changing table only fits ikea's inflatable changing pad which is not very cute.
I posted my nursery in this thread: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/nursery-round-up#post-313119
The crib, mattress, changing table, wardrobe and window seat are all ikea.

On a local moms board, someone posted that she returned her IKEA crib bc it didn't take standard size mattresses. It does take a standard size mattress. The problem is all manufacturers seem to vary by 0.5-1". You just have to check the dimensions and make sure that the crib/mattress combination you've selected will work.

@Mrs. Blue: Thank you!! I added your blog post to my favorites

@lawbee11: We got in Ikea mattress because it was cheap and easy! It's one of the middle of the road ones--seemed like a good compromise between luxurious and super hard. Definitely take a look at the samples in store; the options are all really different.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
@lawbee11: I have the Gulliver, but it's almost the same size as the Sundvik. We don't have an Ikea nearby, and didn't want to pay to have an Ikea mattress shipped in addition to the crib, so we bought a standard mattress from BRU. The mattress was only like $50, and it fits perfectly.
honeydew / 7444 posts
@lawbee11: we got the hensvik crib, and it was sturdy. I didn't go with the ikea mattress. I preferred to splurge on the mattress (which i think is more important than the crib) and it fit in the crib without any problems.
I also got the rocker, and i find it really comfortable! Maybe it's because i am short? I like that i don't need a footstool.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@caffeinated: I am really happy to hear you say that about the rocker because I actually really really like the way the rocker looks! I am not a fan of the standard glider look, and I can't justify spending $700+ on a nice glider.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
I have an Ikea crib and bookshelf. I also bought a nicer mattress and it fits fine. Kids are rough on furniture so I'm not concerned with my $160 investment

We have the Sundvik because it seemed sturdier than the Gulliver, but if I got a do-over, I would have bought the Gulliver instead. It fits the bumper I got (yes, I know they're no longer safe). Plus I think they're both sturdy. The Gulliver got great reviews vs. all the more expensive brands.

We got the Hensvik bookcase for our nursery and i love it. Baby isn't here yet and it's assembled and is super cute and well put together for the price. Ikea furniture has come a long way in the style and durability department.
honeydew / 7444 posts
@lawbee11: i wanted to get the monte joya rocker ($900!!) but my senses returned quickly! I definitely have to prop a pillow against the wooden arm frame to protect LO's head, but it is still quite comfortable. The only negative is that the seat is deep, so you can't get out quickly/easily. I practiced at the store, and felt that it wasn't a big issue for me.

Many pieces in our house are Ikea, and I love them. We didn't use them for our crib or changing table/dresser (probably should have and saved money), but I plan on using them for all of his toddler furniture.

I didn't get any Ikea furniture for the nursery but I have had several pieces in the past and for our current entertainment center. The thing with Ilea furniture is you better be or have someone who can really assemble the pieces perfectly. No one I ever had help me could get the doors or drawers to line up perfectly straight. Even now it drives me batty and I'm always trying to adjust one door to be straight.
