This is my first cycle using the OPK and I am so confused. Maybe I am reading them wrong, but every morning it appears to be positive, and every night negative. How could that be?

Well that's bizarre! I'm guessing your true positive would be late cd15 or early 16. A lot of people have them fade in or fade out with the hormone being strongest in the afternoon.

It's an issue of different urine concentration. Are you taking the afternoon opks on a 3 hour hold with limited fluids?
I would say you should trust the afternoon one, not the morning one. You always have LH in your urine so using super concentrated urine (i.e potentially a 10 hour hold) can make it look positive when it is not.

@LBee: I didn't think about that! I have been doing the am tests right when I wake up. I wish I knew that because now I feel like I have no good basis for when I may have ovulated. Darn it!

@annem1990: OPKs can be annoying, unfortunately, because they can be impacted by fluid intake, etc since LH is always present in your body (unlike HCG, which is why they say to test in morning since urine concentration helps you really know for sure). I ended up having to temp because OPKs were seriously confusing me and stressing me out.
When in doubt, I would just have sex EOD or do the Sperm Meets Egg plan.

I'll also add that there are differences between different batches of opks. With the first box I had - which I used for I think eight cycles - it was always super easy to tell when I ovulated because they'd fade in quickly and usually only have a dark line for one day. Didn't matter what time I took it. Then I got another box (same brand) where I think the tests are much more sensitive, so they always look almost positive and only get a tad bit darker when I ovulate. It's honestly driving me crazy, argh. I think I should just buy another box and hope the quality is like the first one I had. My temps were off this month due to jet lag and between that and the lousy opks, I also find it annoying to not know for sure when I ovulated.

Agree with what @LBee: said. You're actually not supposed to take OPK in the morning. They say afternoon/evening after a nice hold is best.
I did late morning (not fmu) and evening after equal holds.
But if you've been having sex every other day or so (since you thought they were positives) you should be fine
ETA: what I also did was use the cheapie wondfos until I thought I saw a positive and then used a digital opk to confirm. Was very effective for us.
