I haven't been to many places on this list, but I like the spirit of it! Any time I do any significant traveling, I tend to like the rural areas or the smaller cities better than the large, popular cities. I feel like big cities tend to become one giant cultural smoosh, whereas the fringe areas retain their own culture a little better.

@sloaneandpuffy: Agreed...I'd rather go to Chicago than Detroit any day!

@Cole: totally agree with you on Detroit not being tourist friendly. I grew up in Dearborn and still head down there often. I love hanging out in the city, and there is so much to do but it is SO spread out that you have to have a car. There's also the aspect of needing to know where to go and where to stay away from...but I feel like so many people have a bad view of Detroit that would be pleasantly surprised to be shown around by someone who knows the city. There's so much new, cool stuff opening/going on, and I wish more people would give it a chance!

Cynical! Honestly, I don't think any travel destination is overrated! The only place that I can think of that I would not want to travel to is North Korea.

@sunny: I agree with you. I love Portland but Vancouver is different and I love that city, too. Not sure why LA was included in that suggestion.
I've been to LA but it was a different kind of vacation.

@Happygal: From someone who also didn't like Paris.... London is awesome!!! It's definitely worth a visit.

Hmm.....
I prefer Buenos Aires over Rio. But they are so, so different it's really hard t compare. Also, I spent way more time in BA (two months), so I really had a lot of time to feel like I really lived in the city. I still miss the humitas empanadas. No other country has empanadas that compare.
For a resort, I prefer the Caribbean over Mexico. But for backpacking around away from the touristy areas, I much prefer Mexico. I've only been to St. Thomas, Bahamas, St. Maarten, St. John, and D.R, so that's what I'm comparing in terms of beaches. I've been all over Mexico.
Costa Rica and Hawaii is just a crazy comparison. Hawaii is about a thousand times more expensive. I backpacked around CR and stayed in some places that were literally 10$ us a night. And they were great. That would never happen in Hawaii. Hawaii is probably better for tourists that don't like getting off the beaten path much.
I had one of the most fun weeks of my life in Berlin, but I have friends who are obsessed with Budapest and Prague, so it probably depends on the personal experience.
Houston isn't terrible and there are some hidden gems, but hipster it is not (lived 30 years of my life in various places in Texas!) I actually really like Dallas, which wasn't on the list. But I like Austin, too. I prefer Dallas over Houston (similar vibes) and Austin for a more laid back atmosphere and for ACL.
And finally. Paris.....I loved it. But again, I'm sure it's all in the individuals experience. Me...I met a gorgeous Frenchman who rescued my friend and i and bought us fab pastries and let us stay in his girlfriends fantastic flat in the 6th arrondissement when she was gone for two weeks to....lol...Berlin.
I think I could do a lost of underrated travel destinations more easily.

Paris?! Ok, to be honest, before I lived there I understood it--a trip around Paris with the usual tourist rounds is TERRIBLE. I lived there for a year and a half though and it was magical.
From the list, I agree with the Caribbean. Yawn.

I can't believe this writer thinks you can sub LA for Vancouver. Just because both are used as film locations doesn't mean they are in any other way similar. And the LA area (like, LA County and beyond, not the city) is *nothing* like BC. That's ridiculous.

Umm, I don't know about this list. Chicago over Detroit any day (sorry Detroit)... Austin over Houston (sorry Houston)... Carribean over Mexico, definitely.
San Fran is pretty cool, but I do agree that the Bay Area at large has a lot to offer (Big Sur, Monterey, Santa Cruz, etc.)... I generally like Colorado better than Utah, but for skiing, Utah is pretty great.
I like Vegas pretty well, but both my husband and I think it's a little overrated.

I think Houston is underrated. I don't think Austin is necessarily overrated though. I'm glad there aren't more tourists in Houston!
I think Prague is overrated. I far preferred Budapest or even Bratislava.

Instead of Tahiti, go to Cook Islands.
Instead of Auckland, NZ, go to Queenstown, New Zealand. Instead of Oahu, go to Kauai.

Paris seems very hit or miss. I went expecting not to like it because I'd heard so many bad experiences but I ended up loving it, def one of the most magical cities I've been to. We didn't really have a plan but just walked around for a couple days and kept wandering into adventures.
Florence though was the opposite, I'd heard so many great things and then ended up not really liking it. The hillsides around it were gorgeous but the city itself I didn't find all that charming or friendly.

This is hilarious (and untrue). I'm sorry, but as the single Canadian city on that list....go to Vancouver. You'll like it.

mm... I love San Francisco and lived there for 4 years... still love it and I don't think it is a hype at all. I also like Vancouver, and I like Caribbean and have been there many times. I do want to say that we are close to Caribbean that's why we go there more often.... but I probably won't fly more than 4 hours for it.
I do agree Chicago is a bit disappointing though.
And who said Paris is overrated...?? :-O
ETA: For me I think Rome was overrated. Plain personal experience.... I guess we picked a bad hotel right next to the Colosseum, and it is facing an extremely dusty and busy main street. The entire city was very dusty. I like Florence so much more. Another place that was a huge disappointment was Shanghai. Ah! The Pollution!!!! It has potential to be a beautiful place but the pollution ruins it. Maybe if I went in a different time of year it would be better? But I doubt it. Tokyo was not my cup of tea as well.

I don't think most of the places on the list really compare well. How can you compare Mexico and the Caribbean? Some of the islands are fantastic (I love the Virgin Islands) while others are just meh in my opinion (looking at you DR and Jamaica ; ). Same for Mexico - I like the Riviera Maya but could do without Cozumel.
Guess it depends what you're looking for - I love San Francisco, Vancouver, Chicago, etc. They all have something good to offer!
