This is really cool! A baby bootie that monitors breathing and heart rate and alerts you if your baby stops breathing. I remember seeing something about this being in the works when I was pregnant with T, but now they are complete and you can buy them.
$250 though.
Would you buy it? What do you think?

I'm not a fan of these types of monitors. They are not regulated by the FDA, meaning that there is no assurance that they actually do what they claim that they say they do. I think it also gives a false sense of reassurance and some people do things they shouldn't and then justify it by saying 'well, I had a monitor" (like letting baby sleep on stomach early on).

Personally, I can't see myself ever using this (or the other similar devices is). But I also never stressed about my child dying of SIDS in her crib. The odds of that happening are so minuscule that I don't spend my days and nights worrying about it. I also think that they give parents a false sense of security.

@Mrs.KMM: I always knew we had no risk factors for SIDS (cosleeping, smokers in the home, bumpers or blankets in crib, etc) but I still did stress about T just not waking up. I could see this being comforting for me the second time around, but I don't think I would buy this or use it.

Aside from trying not to stress about sids my lo is a houdini with socks booties etc. So I would just end up freaking out all the time when she got the bootie off

SIDS scares me. But things like this (even just reading about them) cause me anxiety instead of letting me breathe easy. Statistically we are a low/risk household, combine this with the actual statistical likelihood (very low) and the price tag and it isn't something I'm willing to get.
If it brings you peace, though, by all means!

We room shared for the first 10 months, and would plan to do it again next time. I'm really prone to anxiety, so for those two reasons, I don't think I'd ever use something like this. If I got a false alarm, it would freak me out. It's just not for us. But, I know people who like these kind of monitors and it works for them.

I think these products (when marketed to a general audience) prey on fear and I find that disgusting. So I am strongly opposed and would not buy them but I don't believe in telling other people how to spend their money.

We bought a Snuzi Hero monitor that clips to DD's diaper to monitor her breathing. I was super paranoid about SIDS so it helps me sleep at night. It went off one night and I reached over to shake her chest pretty hard then heard her take a deep breath like she'd been holding her breath. It very well may have saved her life in that instance. It was $120 so less than the Owlet.

I'm not a fan of any of these types of monitors. They feel really exploitative to me by preying on fears of new parents. I wouldn't buy based on that alone but I think they're completely unnecessary. I didn't worry much about SIDS because we were low risk though and don't believe these will necessarily prevent it from happening anyways.

Ditto @Sapphire. Until there is standardization and regulation, as well as studies showing it actually reduces SIDS I will be staying away. I can only imagine the heart attack I would have for a false alarm! Newborns have pretty crazy breathing patterns anyhow.

Curious as to what people would think about using this for a daycare setting?
We loved our angel care monitor although its a bit finicky because its 4 years old now. We probably need something new anyways.

i was reading that they are working on FDA approval and working with hospitals as well, so it sounds like an interesting device to me, especially after getting the stats when DD2 was in the NICU. i don't know that i personally would spend $250, but it definitely seems more user friendly than others i've seen.

I think it will help me. DH has severe asthma now and when he was 6 months of age, his mother found him blue in his crib and was rushed to the hospital. This terrifies me. I always watch the video monitor to make sure they are breathing. I'm hoping with my genes, my babies won't get asthma (but odds are one of them might get it), so something like this will ease my mind. I know it's not perfect but something that is attached to their foot versus seems much better than other products like the Snuza (attached to their clothes) or angel care monitor (under crib mattress). Also, when it comes to my DH's situation, when he turned blue, he was still moving (struggling to breath still)... to me not moving is dead... so knowing his oxygen levels before they turn blue is better. At least that's what I think.
Oh, plus, DD was just in the hospital for RSV and was rushed to the hospital for a high respiratory rate and destating oxygen levels. Having RSV does increase her chances of having asthma.
So, I contacted them and they have a twin discount! Woohoo! I think I'm going to get it.
My one friend on FB said she has it and loves it and would recommend it. I'm so happy to hear at least one of my friend actually owns it.
Also, like any other baby product, I could try to resell it when I'm done with it. I know I won't get 100% money back but if I can get 50% back, it's could be worth it. Plus, if it saves my baby's life, I would pay $1000 or more for it.

@T.H.O.U.: It was a 50% off discount off the second unit. So I think it was a significant discount. I had no idea what to expect. I thought maybe they would give me a 25% discount so 50% was a pleasant surprise. Well, I guess it was a 25% discount off both, if you think about it.

We have one, and I love it! I was in the first shipment so we had some issues when we finally put it in use. But the company has been awesome about sending me replacement parts and then a completely new owlet when we suspected a problem with the first one. When it's on, I sleep much, much better. Even though we are low risk, I bought one because when I was pregnant my FIL would not shut up about how DH was a SIDS baby and would stop breathing. I like waking up and seeing the green light pulsing. It stops me from checking on DD compulsively.

@bluestriped bee: how do you like the owlet? I just saw an ad for it and I'm considering it. Not sure if it will give me more anxiety or less though! In the NICU, LO was hooked up to pulse and oxygen level monitoring and he had a few bradycardia events.
@Hoots: have you noticed any false alarms?

@sunny: I like it, until it slipped off LOs foot while he was changing him and DH forgot to grab it from the PJs and the foot monitor got washed. 
Luckily, I bought it with the AMEX so I'm waiting for the new foot monitor to arrive.
I think it puts me at ease. It doesn't create more anxiety for me.

I would. We had an angel care monitor and loved it. Once our kids were rolling and setting off false alarms we retired it, but it really helped us sleep better. The difference was that I'd waking up and instead of getting out of bed to check on her I would just roll over and watch her movement on the monitor for a minute.
With the botty I just wonder if it would stay on.

I def want this due to a family history of severe asthma and LOs history of a heart arrhythmia (not detectable recently but possibly still there at times). $250 is toouch for menthpugh, bc I know the risk is miniscule. ... but I'm very temptesd. Things like this help me relax more, instead of false alarms creating anxiety.
