So, I bought one of those kits from Home Depot. Anyone try it? I'm off for the summer and have tons of free time,(already painted the dining room. LOL) so I thought I'd try it.

We just did this in our kitchen and it turned out awesome! We used the espresso color too. A few tips, make sure you fully degloss, this is the most important step. We skipped the glaze after reading several reviews that said and showed there wasn't much of a difference with the dark colors. We also did not use the provided top coat after reading many reviews that claimed it bubbled and was hard to get smooth. We used polycrylic instead. Thinking back we were a little disappointed to spend so much on the kit and then not use half of it, but the base coast was unique in that it is thinner than regular paint and allows the wood grain to show through on our cabinets, which we really liked.
We're still finishing the full remodel, so pardon the mess and the missing stove. You can see on the bottom left the color the cabinets used to be also. We didn't refinish the area that the stove will hide.

@kiddosc: love that!
I've never done it.... The previous owners of the house painted our cabinets yellow and green. everyone always asked when I was going to paint them after taking a tour of our house, but I love color so they're staying. They also asked when we were going to paint the outside of the house..... After we already did! I wish these things came in more colors for when I want to redo our cabinets.

@PointeShoesTutus: It's minwax polycrylic in a satin finish.
@artbee: Check the rustoleum website, it comes in tons of colors. There's a light base and a dark base and you have them tuned at the store like regular paint.
DH would like me to point out that the floor tile is not complete yet. He's slightly mortified I posted this in progress pic.

Love that it's easy to use! We're looking to repaint our kitchen cabinets too so thanks for the tip!

I painted my cabinets, not with a kit or anything just regular paint plus some intense cleaner to prep the surface. I will say two things with certainty:
1) The outcome was incredible
2) The time commitment was ridiculous!
If you have the time to do it - go for it. I was working 10 hour days and painting at night. I wanted to kill people!

@kiddosc: OMG! THANK YOU! Wow, they look great! My cabinets are EXACTLY like your old ones! I can't wait to get started now. Was it hard taking the cabinets off and putting them back on?

Thanks ladies! I'm SO glad I posted this, tons of tips for all of us!LOL!
I was SO scared to start this project. I'm off for the summer, so I think I'll start next week.
@Mrs D: That's what I'm nervous about the time, since I am not patient. LOL! Maybe I'll send Baby Bear to Grandma's for a few days.lol

I would LOVE to paint our cherry cabinets white and install new hardware. I would have to have a professional do it though since our apartment is only 800 sq ft and we don't have any outdoor space. Even if we were okay with random doors and drawers sitting out drying for months (which it would definitely take) we have a major ventilation problem and with me being pregnant I can't breathe in the fumes.
I think cherry cabinets are beautiful, but they're not my style and ours really need some updating. They fit the kitchen perfectly though, so I would never want to replace them just paint.

@Mrs D: oh man, im not looking forward to all that. We're doing the cabinets as well as the countertops and the tile border. Im going to be in painting hell.
