Currently, we have an old trash compactor that we don't use, and instead use a standing trash can. I'm considering getting a pull out trash can built-in to replace the trash compactor so we would get slightly more space in our kitchen. Do you like yours? I'm afraid the built-in will get a bit gross and muggy in there and be hard to clean!! What do you think?

We have one and love it! We're taking the trash out almost daily anyway, so it doesn't get too gross. And the "platform" thing that the can hangs on isn't hard to clean when people miss the can.

We have one and like it the space it's saving and the discreetness! I wipe down just like the rest of the kitchen and take out trash almost everyday so no problems!

I would absolutely convert a cabinet to a pull out...i am thinking of doing it my bathroom, as a matter of fact.

But we don't have the luxury of a big kitchen, so I guess it makes sense.

@Weagle: @snowjewelz: I think my DH who is the trash taker-outter would not like having to take it out every day! That's why he loves cloth diapering, so he doesn't have to take out diaper trash! LOL!
We live in a condo complex, so the garbage bin is a further walk away!

My ILs have one -- two bins actually, one for the recycling and one for garbage - and they really like it.

@cranberryapple: DH does all of our trash too. It's not like it's a tiny trash can, but at this point we're just creating a ton of trash for some reason. It's probably more like every other day.

@cranberryapple: well first of all, it's tiny. And it has this removable rim thing that gets gross. (Goes on top of the can to hold the bag down in place.) And inevitably, stuff falls out of the trash can, onto the "floor" I guess, of the cabinet that it's housed in. We have a separate compost, so we don't have much food waste in the actual trash can, so I suppose that helps. It really just irritates me more than anything. But I make DH deal with it all, lol!
I also kind of feel like whatever smells there are, get trapped in the cabinet, and then when you open it they all rush out at you at once. Growing up, (and at my parents house now) we had/have a traditional stand alone trash can, and I never feel like it smells or anything. Of course that could be because my dad takes the trash out about every other day. Here, our bags are something crazy like 2.50 per bag (it's a "trash tax") so DH tries to cram at LEAST a week's worth of trash into one bag. I have to ask him for like, 3 days in a row before he'll take it out. (But that's good for the planet and everything.)
Trash is just gross to me.

@cranberryapple: We only take it out almost daily cuz our trash pile up.. But for example, I'm home alone this week and I haven't taken it out at all. And I would think the smell level is really the same as a stand alone trash can??

We have one and love it! I don't find it gets gross at all I just line it with a garbage bag.

We have a pull out trash bin built into one of our cabinets. I love it. I don't have to look at a trash barrel in my kitchen, I can leave it open while cooking to easily throw stuff away, and the barrel can be easily removed to clean inside the cabinet, although I haven't yet had to because the barrel opening is large enough that we don't miss when we throw something into it.

We have one but don't use it for trash. I keep cleaning supplies in it. I think it would get icky awfully fast, especially since we don't have a/c and the summers can get hot. Our kitchen is small, just a little u-shape, but I still prefer to have the regular trash can.

Love! Ours is pull-out and we have trash in front, recycling in back. I don't take it out until it's full and have never had smell issues.

We have one and I love it! Never had issues with ickiness or smells. But I'm also anal about the trash and take it out when it's almost full....I never let it over flow and spill into the cabinet.

We had to get one because our dogs could break into any trash can that was out.

I like it and would recommend it. Our doesn't get too gross. We also compost, so it cuts down on food in the trash so we haven't had any issues with smell. I also take the plastic tubs out and wipe out the cabinet once every couple of months. It's mostly crumbs.
Our cabinet doors are still on the hinges, so we have to open the cabinet door and then slide out the trash can. Young House Love had a post a while ago where they installed one and used a door mount kit that looks like a good option we might look into in the future:
