This happened to me once in a Starbucks drive through. I had planned on paying with my app and only had enough in my account for one inexpensive drink. I didn't want to sound like a scrooge and ask how much the person's behind me was only to find out their total and then say I wouldn't pay that much, so I did nothing. In retrospect I could have just paid whatever balance I had in my account, but I panicked.

This has happened to me... I just paid for the persons behind me.... I think it was about 3x as much as my order.

I don't get the point of this, in all honesty. If someone is going through the drivethru, presumably they have the funds. I would rather buy a meal for someone that truly needs it. On occasion, as time allows, I will buy a hard roll or bagel and give it to a homeless person.

@looch: agreed! I've never had this happen to me, but if I did I would take the $ and buy a homeless person a meal instead.

@looch: I've done this before. I've pulled up to DD and paid for the person behind me. I felt like buying someone a cup of coffee. Yes, she probably had the funds to pay for it, but I wanted to make someone's day. Something as small as this can change someone's outlook on their day, week, month, etc. They don't have to pay it forward at the drive thru, but maybe somewhere else.

I pay it forward to the next driver regardless of the cost. Usually it's more $$ than mine lol.

@looch: I've also had this done and it made my day. I absolutely paid it forward. I think it's nice to do something for someone just because. It doesn't stop you from buying a meal for the homeless.

I've had this happen once and I continued the trend not really thinking about it.
Now that I'm in several loss groups, I know a lot of women who start things like this in memory of their kids. It brings them so much joy to see kind acts passed on, so now it means more to me to continue the kindness.
I don't really think it's about the money at all. It's just about doing something kind and receiving kindness and the way that can affect other things you do from that moment on.
It might not affect everyone that way, but when it does, it's served it's purpose.

It hasn't happened to me, but I prob would either A) be so surprised that I forget to pay it forward right away or B) just say pay for the next car no matter the amount...

I think it's a great thing to do as a small act of kindness and I agree it could make someone's day. However, the fact that now there is the expectation that people then pay for the next person I think kind of defeats the purpose. You're still paying for your coffee or whatever...I don't know I guess I just don't get the warm and fuzzies by a long stream of people paying for each other's coffees.

I never go through drive throughs so this wouldn't happen to me. It's very nice but I prefer to donate my money to charitable organizations so I wouldn't pay for the next person's order.

@looch: I don't really see the point either esp if you are just going to pay for the next person's. we're all just paying for someone else's order instead of our own?

Today I was the 11th person in a pay it forward line at Chik-fil-a. I had my money out- cash and change ready to go. Since I was paying with cash I asked how much the next car was and it was 5X more than mine. The pay it forward line stopped with me. The girl doing the drinks had a yeah-that's-what-I-would-have-done look on her face.

pay it forward, no matter the price...(within reason of course....)
I've had it happen twice at starbucks...once at a toll road...
Its a nice gesture...just that...

This happened to me about a week ago. When they told me my drink was covered the next question was if I'd like to pay for the next person. I did especially since it was about half the price of mine. But I think the workers automatically asking if you want to pay for the next person takes the fun out of it.

@Mrs D: We were headed to the Jersey Shore with friends, and they had their toll paid for them on the way down. It totally made their day and lifted their spirits.

Its never happened to me but i would pay the full amount of the person behind me. I used to hear about it on some christian radio stations its intended to be a random act of kindness. It will definitely put a smile on someones face.

@Miss Ariel: Yes, they should not ask!!
It has happened to me a few times! I usually pay for the person behind me no matter the cost!
I have also had dinner paid for before!
Me and DH were at a restraunt and decided to eat at the bar because the wait was so long, the gentleman sitting next to me was listening to us talk
At the time we were struggling with IF and talking about a recent loss.
When he left apparently he told the bartender he would pay for our bill and only asked that we cast all our worries onto the Lord, in return!!!!!!!!!! It made my day, week, month....so kind!!!

I was at subway one time and the guy in front of me paid for my sub. I think he felt bad for me because I was trying to get my like under 2 year old at the time to wait patiently inline and was wearing my newborn, I think I looked kind of stressed. When I went to pay, the cashier said the guy in front paid for my sub and I paid for the combo. It was super nice, she said he's a regular and does it all the time. I didn't pay for the next person because honestly, it never crossed my mind at the time as I was so surprised.
It hasn't happened in a drive through, but if it did, I would pay for a coffee, or the same that was paid for me, but I wouldn't pay for something that was a lot more than mine, just because we're watching money usually haha.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: That is awesome, but doesn't it make you kind of want to pay it forward when you can again?
Even if you can't..that time.... I think that spirit stays with you

@sapphire: Honestly you are right, but the thought is what I think counts! To think someone was thinking of you a stranger.

@FaithFertility: it makes me want to stock up my car with granola bars and trail mix and water bottles and hand it out when I see people asking for money or food at red lights.
I have had a toll paid for me and my morning DD coffee once and it totally made my day, but like @Miss Ariel: said something about the cashier asking to see if I wanted to participate and not break the momentum irked me a bit. I felt bad that I couldn't justify spending 5X more on my lunch. It wasn't like the car behind me could not afford what they ordered because well they ordered it. If I had my credit card out that may have been a different story. There is something to be said about using cash!

A couple of weeks ago, I was at the Starbucks drive thru. A nice guy let me in the line because I pulled into a different entrance. I paid for his coffee. I didn't think anything of it. Personally, it's a nice gesture.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: i agree. If it was a credit card I would have but cash in the right exact amount? I would have felt like Scrooge but probably done the same thing. By the way no one has ever paid it forward to me! I rarely use drive through so that's probably why!

@junebugsmama: we have to coordinate some drive thru bumper action someday me first- just kidding!
