I tend to shoot wide with toddlers because they're so quick, they're out of focus. So a 3.2 is usually my go-to value...1/100 is too slow of a shutter speed for the most part. You want that denominator as high as possible so it's quick (ie 1/2000)

What ISO are you shooting at? That's your other varying factor. If it's super bright out, a 100 or 200 ISO should be no problem. Dusk, 600 or 800.

You might just need a speedlight at this point! i almost ALWAYS need one inside....mostly to counterbalance the ugly lighting

So you definitely need to up the ISO. I haven't used the T2i so I don't know how the low light performance is-- on my older Rebel I could push things up to 1600 and it was okay with noise reduction, any higher it wasn't good. I've also not used the 70D so I don't know how that does-- but maybe research how much higher you could push it, if you didn't want to buy a flash?

But yea-- if you're shooting at 1.8 your DoF is sooo shallow it is super hard to get anything moving in focus! Definitely up to around 3.2. I have not found that you need to go SO high for shutter speed. Upping to even 1/250 will give you a great increase in sharpness. So I guess my advice is-- if you want to avoid spending money, set your ISO to 1600, your aperture to 3.2, and see how fast you can get your shutter speed while keeping the photo well exposed. If you can't get up to 250 you pretty much have to buy a flash. If you do get a flash, I would recommend shooting at ISO 400. A really great flash (the one I use) that refreshes really fast so you can keep shooting is the 580 ex (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Speedlite-580EX-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000NP3DJW). But if you want something a little cheaper and are okay with a slower refresh rate you can get a 430 ex (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Speedlite-430EX-Digital-Cameras/dp/B001CCAISE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1415045285&sr=1-1&keywords=480+ex). If you're going to shoot with flash do a bit of research on it, but the best advice I can give you to start is DON'T POINT THE FLASH AT THE KID. lol. Point it up/behind you so the light bounces all around and you get a more evenly lit subject without harsh shadows.

You need to control your ISO. For indoors with no flash/light, you need to bump up to 1600 or so. Outdoors on a bright day, ISO 100. 1/100 shutter speed is too slow for a fast moving kid!

@Adira: Yeah, the DOF might just be too short at 1.8-2.8. But yeah, if you have a flash (and I totally hate the built in one too, it just ruins pics imo) then you can do a faster shutter speed so it wont be blurry due to movement and smaller aperture so you have a much larger DOF that he wouldn't move out of.
I'd also be wary of ISO that is too high since pictures may too grainy for your liking. Definitely test out shots with different ISO settings with same shutter/aperture on your laptop at full resolution to see what you think.

Yes, definitely play with ISO first, I didn't read that part. It's such a slippery slope.

@Adira: check your image info to see what ISO you've been at previously.

I would up your ISO to 1600. Then, set your camera to Aperture priority (the big A) and set your aperture to 5.6. I don't suggest using a wider aperture with moving kids inside because you won't have much margin for focusing. When I take pics of kids moving at 2.8 or lower, I'll get the wrong thing in focus, like an ear or the tip of their nose instead of the eyes. 5.6 will give you a greater area of things in focus, even though it compromises some speed.

I had to upgrade my camera. The ISO on my old one (Nikon D50) only went to 800 and even with a fast lens it just wasn't enough. I get a D7100 and can shoot at 3200 or 4000 with almost no grain, and up to 6400 with usually-acceptable grain. The only other option I had was to add a speedlight -- I still want to get one but I don't want to HAVE to use it all the time.

Also, another +1 to back button focusing and also to toggling your focus point, if you aren't already. The downside is that you can't just hand your camera to someone else to use, since most people just can't figure out how to do it, but my photography improved so much once I started doing these things. I still need to get faster at toggling but it's pretty rare that I miss focus now, even when I shoot wide open! I think 2.2-2.8 is usually my sweet spot of good focus and good bokeh.

Ideally - f/2.8, 1/125-1/150 is generally safe for a moving baby. Then pump up the iso. Different cameras tolerate high iso in many ways, so you'll have to play around a bit. Shooting a wide open f/stop is problematic because basically only an eye will be in focus, and the general picture overall can come out too soft.
