Ok so I'm from Australian and pumpkin here is a savoury dish only... But in the US you have pumpkin pie... Which I'm presuming is sweet? Does everyone love it? Is there other desserts u use it in? We are talking pumpkin as in the vegetable right?

Yes, pumpkin pie is sweet. You should try it one day. It's really good! There are tons of recipes for pumpkin related desserts out there. I dare say they are all good, but I love pumpkin.

omg pumpkin is so delicious.
pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin pie..

Yep, we mostly put it in dessert type dishes during the fall season--usually they also have cinnamon and nutmeg in them to add some sweetness/spice. You should make a pumpkin pie and taste it as a dessert!

Yes, there are actually a lot of vegetables that can be made sweet, and delicious. Carrot cake, zucchini cake, sweet potato pie, pumpkin pie...
You should find a recipe online and try making it!

Oh I totally lied... I just realised we have pumpkin scones... They are sweet. Hmmm time to make a pumpkin dessert I think! Is pumpkin pie a good one to try first?
@chopsuey119: cheesecake???! You really are a wonderful pumpkin hehe

@Arden: good point about carrot cake.... I wonder why sweet pumpkin recipes are popular here...

@Mrs squirreld: I made a pumpkin cheesecake tonight! It was pretty easy, but pumpkin pie is crazy simple.

You can obviously use any canned pumpkin.

@Mrs squirreld: Never had it! Usually do butternut squash in things like soup/stews/etc.

@boiledpnut: thanks!!' I will have a go!! Ok first problem. We don't have canned pumpkin here... I can just steam/boil a fresh pumpkin right?
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
@Mrs squirreld: Ah, I bet that is the difference. We have a serious abundance of canned pumpkin here (usually, sometimes there is a shortage and everyone gets very freaked out) which is usually made from the small ones that are very sweet. I think a larger, fresh pumpkin won't be as sweet and will work better in savory dishes (although I'm just assuming you mean a larger pumpkin over a bunch of small ones)
honeydew / 7589 posts
@Mrs squirreld: Yes, it's better with fresh pumpkin. Just boil a fresh one and mash it.
Try to find a recipe that calls for fresh pumpkin though, because often when you buy a can of pumpkin here it's already sweetened. So you would have to add extra sweetening if the recipe called for sweetened canned pumpkin.

@Mrs squirreld: Sure you can! Just use a cooked and mashed pumpkin. I think you're supposed to use sugar pumpkins or something called a cheese pumpkin?
honeydew / 7230 posts
I don't really get it either and I'm in the US! I actually live about ten minutes away from the "Pumpkin Capital of the World" where Libby's pumpkins are grown and there's a huge pumpkin festival each fall with pumpkin treats (ice cream, doughnuts, pancakes, chili, etc) and the whole thing grosses me out! Also, I just baked a pumpkin pie for tomorrow and it's lopsided and silly looking. Oops!

I must say, I think pumpkin cheesecake is the best of all pumpkin things! Had a slice at Cheesecake Factory today and it was absolutely heavenly...drooling on keyboard now.

@Arden: Of all the pumpkin items, I'd probably be most inclined to like the ice cream! I've never had an ice cream I didn't like

@tororojo: That's what I made tonight-a copycat recipe of the Cheesecake Factory's pumpkin cheesecake. They do have the absolute best.
nectarine / 2522 posts
hmmm ok thanks everyone...I have never heard of any of those pumpkin... but it looks like the smaller darker flesh ones are best... I'll have to report back after I've made it!!
@highwire: We call butternut squash..butternut pumpkin... so there you go... there are so many different types of pumpkin here.

@boiledpnut: Oh wow, that's amazing--theirs is so light and fluffy and perfect, I just love it!

@Mrs squirreld: If you can explain to me why your hamburgers have beetroot I'll explain why we have so many sweet pumpkin dishes!
grapefruit / 4584 posts
And pumpkin bread/pumpkin muffins! If you're ok with pumpkin scones, that might be a good segway into the wonderful world of pumpkin desserts.
@Mrs Squirreld: also make note that if the recipe calls for canned pumpkin pie filling, that usually contains nutmeg, cinnamon, etc., in addition to a sweetener, so you'll need to add those to a pumpkin you're steaming yourself as well. Happy baking!

@PinkElephant: hahaha beetroot is sooo good in a burger!!! Especially if there is cheese in there too!! Try it!!

pumpkin is gross.
you know what's a funny word to read after reading it fifty times in a row?
PUMPKIN.

I personally really dislike pumpkin pie. But love many many other pumpkin treats. Pumpkin scones, pumpkin cheesecake, and my mom makes these delicious pumpkin brownies with a coconut icing. Mmmmmmmm.

@Mrs squirreld: Try this recipe, I used it for my Thanksgiving pumpkin pie this year, and it looks (and smells) divine!

i look forward to thanksgiving all year because of pumpkin pie. i can eat half a pie in one sitting. i make pumpkin bread all the time too, it smells so good while baking and tastes better the next day!

@Mrs squirreld: that's so funny! I am cooking my pumpkin in the oven (I prefer to bake rather than boil) right now to make my pumpkin pie! It's super duper good!
I have had pumpkin as savory though too; however the other pps are right that in America pumpkin is viewed more as a dessert-related item. It's in lattes, scones, bread, cookies, pies etc but hardly ever as a stand-alone vegetable.
Whereas other veggies that are use in sweets, like zucchini and carrots, are commonly eaten both ways.

I don't think I've ever had pumpkin in a savoury way!!!!
I've only ever had it as a sweet thing and I LOVE pumpkin pie (which is saying a lot because I don't actually like most types of pies).

My BIL is Australian. I also just learned that you guys don't eat mustard on pretzels. So weird to me!
clementine / 943 posts
The only thing I don't understand are those gross pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks-that syrup they use.... Blecccccchhh!!!
Otherwise, pumpkin in baking= delicious. If you use an actual pumpkin, you need to use the small sugar pumpkins- the big ones, like we carve for Halloween, aren't good for baking.
