Learn from my mistake! Some of you may know that I have been talking about lo having some pretty had diarrhea recently. It started with a fever for a couple of days, nothing terrible, but the diarrhea lasted awhile. We had to give some poo samples and finally got the results ..... its salmonella. We use a cart cover sometimes but not all the time and after talking to the doctor feel like that's the cause. Now we will ALWAYS be using one!
Lo is already feeling 100% better, thank goodness!

Oh no! I always kind of think people are a little crazy with wiping things down, covering, etc (not in a judgey way, in a I think that's silly but I know I'll do it too, way) but I guess not! How scary! Glad she is better now.

@Foodnerd81: me too! I consider myself a pretty relaxed parent when it comes to that kind of thing and figure she needs some germs to build her immune system. But now I know- grocery carts where there might have been raw chicken needs to be a cover. Other stores that just sell things like clothes we still might go without.

Yikes! Poor LO! DH and I briefly talked about cart covers the other day and his stance was that they are not necessary. I just had to read your story to him!

Yikes!!! So glad to hear she is feeling better. I feel so bad for her!!! =( I was same as some PP's and figured some germs are good but this is no beuno - eew. Buying cover now!

@Coco Bee: carts are fine as long as you cover or clean it! I think its a lot easier to shop with my lo in the cart and she has fun in there. I just never thought about someone putting raw chicken in it right before I put my lo in it. And of course she touched the cart and then her mouth. But that wont happen with my cover!

@artbee: yeah I did wipe it down. One of our local stores actually provides sanitizing wipes... but still now it eeks me out!!
totally unrelated, moreso to your egg post: but I had learned that eggs that come straight from the farm don't carry a risk of salmonella. It's only once they're cleaned and "pasteurized" that they then become susceptible to bacteria. I guess eggs have a much thicker "shell" and by cleaning them it strips them of it's protective barrier.
So eggs from a henhouse that are cleaned only moments before using them are actually okay to eat raw. I've dabbled in making my own homemade mayo and it uses raw eggs. I won't use storebought eggs for that!

Eeeek, that's horrible! I have been uncertain about what I'll do when LO is that age, but I guess we should invest in a cart cover seeing what can happen! Yikes.
@Coco Bee: I watched an Alton Brown show on mayo and he recommends pasteurized eggs (if you're buying from the store) for recipes that call for them raw. I think they cost more but the risk is lower.

@tororojo: My dad has chickens so if I make mayo I get my eggs from him. There is another chicken farm only a few miles from my parents that I've gotten eggs from too.
If I cook eggs I buy them from the store, no big deal. Because it's a lot more work to drive to a farm just for eggs. They're generally cheaper from the farm though.

@Coco Bee: Ohhh I get it, that makes a lot of sense if you have farm fresh ones readily available! I think the freshest I could get around here would be from...Central Market maybe?

Yes I always advice people to always use a cart cover because the wipes dont get into all the crevices. I used to work in a supermarket and I saw all the nasty stuff that goes into and on the carts. But most parents dont really care about it. Just yesteday I saw a mom with her toddler and he was licking the cart and she was fine with it
