Wow. That's excessive! I mean, she was 8?!

@alphagam84: Um, the child WAS hurt. She was severely shocked with high voltage and then had open wounds from the metal hooks.

It was absolutely excessive. 1 or 2 officers could have absolutely overpowered her. They are specifically trained in disarming people with knives, and this was a little 70 pound girl. Uncalled for. I completely support the lawsuit.

Ugh, terrible. This is like the same thing as all those articles I keep seeing though about cops shooting dogs that are a "threat" and then you find out it was like...a baby Pomeranian.

@alphagam84: @Mrs.Panda: I agree. There really aren't enough facts about what exactly was happening when the officers felt they needed to make that choice.

On a side note, the lawyer for the family of the girl sounds like a pretty horrible person who is just looking for a pay day. She is quoted as describing the girl as "an 8 year old, 70 pound Indian girl". First of all, what does the girl's race have to do with whether or not officers should have been able to disarm her? Second of all, the proper term is Native American.

I have to imagine it's the low point in a hostage negotiator's career when he and 3 other cops can't disarm or talk down an 8 year old child with a tiny paring knife. Or, at least it should be.

I think tasing a child is totally out of line, unless it's absolutely extraordinary circumstances. Hopefully it was used as a last result; only the cops know for sure.
