Hello all, I was just wondering if anyone here has had an abdominal hernia (not umbilical) after having a child. I was wondering if you had to get surgery to correct it before having more children. Thanks

I'm not sure if I do, but I think I might. I've read that sometimes they are small and don't require medical attention unless they are causing other problems. I had diastasis recti and I swear everything was moved around in there.
I believe I may have an abdominal hernia because when I bend forward something gets 'caught' on the right side and I have to push it out of the way to sit up again. It's painful for a minute but eventually goes away when I'm upright. It's never for normal movement, just yoga or other exercises.

I believe I do. I don't think my hernia is actually umbilical - it seems to be more to the far right of my belly button. It never hurts in the belly button area. I do feel the tissue in that area get stuck like @rachiecakes: mentioned and I have to push it back in but the pain resolves instantly. I have a lovely DR, too, so basically my stomach is not my favorite part on my body.
I'm currently pregnant now and after talking to several women who had hernias decided I'd wait to have the surgery until after my last pregnancy (and that's probably this one). So after this I will ask for a referral to a surgeon to get it fixed.

@coopsmama: YES!! mine is also on the right side, almost under my rib.
Between the DR, the nerve damage from my episiotomy and the suspected hernia, I haven't been to a fitness class since J was born because I'm so self-conscious I won't be able to follow along and the teacher will call me out.

@rachiecakes: It's so tough. You never think about this sort of damage after giving birth so I feel like, for me, it's been emotionally hard to deal with. Especially when the majority of people I know have given birth and won't have to deal with forever needing to change their exercise routines due to DR or having abdominal pain or constant back pain from it. Not to mention always looking a few months pregnant - even when back to pre-pregnancy weight! Ugh. I wouldn't wish DR on my worst enemy.
Eventually I may just have the surgery and a TT to go along with it.

I'm pretty sure that I have an umbilical hernia from J's labor and delivery. My belly button hasn't returned to its normal look after 7.5 months. My mom commented that sometimes it happens with fast deliveries. My SIL had the same thing with her second labor and delivery. She eventually got the surgery to fix it.

@coopsmama: Thank you for saying that! it's very true, I know no one IRL that has had these issues. I was (still am?) insanely jealous of anyone that is up and about, working out, crossfit/running:etc shortly after birth. And there are certain activities that I'll never do again.

I feel the same about DR and how (like with much in life) you don't know what it's like until you have it. I don't know anyone who has had a hernia and gotten clear answers on what to do with it as far as having another baby or surgery.
