Hello, parents! First time posting because I am faced with a sudden opportunity that I need to make a decision on, and I am struggling.
I am a teacher, and I was recently presented with the opportunity to job share next year at a different school in my district (I would be moving from kindergarten to first grade, which I have never taught). I'd be co-teaching M,T and alternating W, allowing me to stay home 50% of the time. This sounds amazing to me! I've had a lot of mom guilt about returning to work, so being able to stay home part time would be such a gift.
However, there are some cons, primarily financially. We'd barely be even each month, and would definitely have to dip into savings. I'm seeing this as a one year deal, and I would return to teaching full-time the next year. It's pretty shocking, but part-time childcare in our area still costs a fortune. We're fortunate that we currently have a healthy savings account, but my husband and I are both worried should an emergency come up (we recently had to remodel our kitchen because of a burst pipe) or if he were to lose his job.
Basically, is it worth the loss of income? I so want to be there for my son's first year, seeing all the precious moments that I would no doubt miss if he were in daycare full-time. It just doesn't seem fair that someone else would get to spend all that wonderful time with him, and I'm going to get stuck with early morning rushed wake-ups and evening bedtime struggles. But, we're going to have to make some pretty big financial sacrifices to keep me at home, even part-time.
What would you do? Thanks for reading, I appreciate all thoughts/advice.
