Has anyone else had issues with potty training at daycare? my daughter is potty trained at home but not daycare. I'm trying to work with the teachers on this but they haven't been super helpful (they just want pull-ups bc its easier for them). Was there anything your LOs teacher did specifically to help? Or did it just happen in time?

My LO was potty trained at home but the teachers in the toddler daycare class weren't really supportive about it. We just sent her in pullups or cloth trainers and she switched to preschool 3 months later and the teachers allowed undies. It didn't take long for her to to be fully trained at school!

@autumnlove: thanks! did she have any issue regressing at home? My daughter is in a similar situation and she should be moving to the older class in the next month or two. i know she'll get it fast once shes in underwear all the time, but the teachers in her current class just aren't helping her much.
i'm counting down the days til she transitions! i haven't been a huge fan of her current teachers for other reasons and this def doesn't help!

Have you talked to the director? I actually brought it up with her first. Once I knew LO was capable of using the potty at home, I told the director I would be putting her in underwear. I told her to let me know if the teachers are having too many problems and if so, we can go back to pull-ups. They were okay with this arrangement.

@Freckles: i've thought about it (still thinking about it). i think i would definitely talk to the director if my daughter was going to be in that class for a long period of time. but since she is moving up soon and i know the older class is much better about potty training, i was holding off on talking to the director. also, the last time i talked to the director about an issue with the teachers, the teachers acted really weird around me for a couple days. i'm trying to keep the relationship "good" with the teachers since my son will be in that class in about half a year or so. Bleh.
i definitely should've made my intentions clear from the beginning with the director and teachers and started in underwear fully, but the teachers kept putting her back into pullups even with spare underwear in her cubby and by the time i talked to them about it (only a day or 2 after!) she definitely had gotten used to wearing pullups at school thanks for the suggestion! i def should've thought more about this before i started.

How old is your LO? Our daycare has been great for potty-training, at least her current room is (2 to 3 year olds). I know that in her prior one (for 12 mo to 24 mo), the teachers weren't great with potty-training because most of the kids were in diapers. Hopefully it works out!

I'm worried that daycare isn't doing enough. We seem to backslide during the week when DD's friend is at daycare. That girl has been in pull ups five months and refuses to potty. So LO often joins her no potty party. I don't want to push the issue until LO2 arrives in the next few weeks since I expect a regression at that point anyway.

@lemong: she turned 2.5 last month. i agree that that is the main issue. her class is about 18month-32ish months. in a class of about 25, only about 4 are potty training. so yeah most of the kids are in diapers and so i don't think they are equipped or trained at potty training at all. usually the kids transition to the next class at around 24-28 months but the older classes are backed up right now. so instead, the director is gonna have a bunch of the kids (my daughter included) skip to the young 3's class. so they definitely should be more equipped at potty training (i hope!!). also, one last rant, its weird bc her current teacher kind of pushed us to potty train, but once we did they didn't give us the support we need to continue it. i talked to another mom and she felt the same way. like dont tell us to potty train if you're not gonna help them continue the training! (okay rant over
)@Corduroy: ack, sorry you're going through that!! yeah i agree it doesn't seem like our daycare is doing enough. they do what i ask, but it seems like they do it begrudgingly just cause i told them too. they're not proactive about helping.
i'm hoping the teachers in the older class will have some tips or at least support her more.

My daughter was potty trained at home, but not at daycare. What (has) worked for us is completely dropping the pull-ups at school and having her teacher take her every 30 minutes and/or when she asked. We started putting her in panties and sending 3 change of clothes in the case of an accident starting last Thursday. it's been going well so far. She had 1 accident on Thursday which her teachers and I chalked up to her being caught up by playing and forgetting to go, none on Friday and one on Monday. I'm hoping today she has no accidents, but the 1 isn't too bad either.
Can you do that? Send her in panties with extra clothes just in case of accidents. Will they work with her? Sorry they're giving you troubles!

That's really crappy of your daycare teacher to do that! I think the transition should help - LO1 pottytrained because her BFF started wearing undies instead of diapers. Peer pressure can be great.

@MarieJ: so what i asked them to do previously was to put her only in underwear, and to just take her every hour. at home she can definitely last 1-2 hours before having to pee again, but some reason at school she was having accidents every 30 ish minutes. so instead of tryign to help her get better at it, they just told me "we changed her like you told us to, she kept having accidents" and then would kind of blame the accidents on us not training her on a real toilet (we started with the standalone but we've been working with her on the real toilet as well) and then also blamed it on her not telling them when she had to go. its like really?? she tells us when she needs to go but i'm sure at school shes more distracted and might need to be asked at least in the beginning of training.. ugh i'm giving up on these teachers. i just spoke to the director and she said my daughter might be moved up earlier than august. i'm hoping thats the case!! but to answer your question, that sounds like a great plan and once we move up to the next class i'm going to tell the teachers about bringing her every 30 minutes and just ditching the pullups. thanks for your advice!!

@kodybear: it definitely sounds like they're not helpful at all. I would definitely ask them to take her every 30 and/or when she asks & if they slack on that, I'd talk to the director

Bumping this. My son is 100% trained at home- through the night most the time and always dry after a 3 hour nap. He has done great, very relaxed and the whole process was easy, and will go on the potty anywhere, including daycare. But most days he has accidents at daycare (only pee). It's been probably 7 weeks. They refuse to let him go without a diaper at naptime until he is a week 100% no accidents. This seems ridiculous to me because he NEVER pees during nap. I'm really unhappy about it but otherwise I love his teachers. What should I do?

Ugh we’ve been in this boat. Are you sure they are actual ‘accidents’? I was getting (and still get) wet clothes home multiple times per week and I literally could not understand how this was possible as he hasn’t had an accident in MONTHS at home. So I asked what was happening and turns out DS makes it to the toilet on time but often times makes his pants wet if they aren’t pulled down enough or if he doesnt point himself down enough. We’ve been working on it at home to the point where he likes to now totally remove his pants and undies, but the ‘accidents’ have decreased dramatically. I would see what the teachers say about when it happens and what he’s doing and go from there. As for the diaper at nap, our daycare pretty much enforces that for most of the preschool room kids as far as I know because they wouldn’t expect them to be sleep trained yet at 2.5/3. Personally, I’m ok with it but you could ask them to try not to do it if you really feel it’s hindering him or suggest a pee pad under the blanket so they wouldn’t have to clean a cot in case he did go.

@muffinsmuffins: Thanks for the input, I didn't know that was a typical policy so I feel better. I don't think it;s hindering him I guess. I am sending him in cloth diapers because throwing out a diaper that is DRY and perfectly clean every day was killing my soul. And yes he does pee on the back of his pants! and they will just tell me when that happens and sometimes don't change him which is totally fine by me! other times, accidents b/c he refuses to tell them when he has to go. He pees happily on the toilet with them, then will just piss himself 30 minutes later. It makes no sense.
