My daughter is 15 months and I stick her on the potty regularly. She asks sometimes but I also just stick her on sometimes when she wakes up and between diaper changes. She's a twice a day pooper ( though never at the same time of day) and will go several days with them all being on the potty (but the opposite happens too- getting less frequent though). We did the same with my older daughter and she poop trained first and slowly did more and more of her pee pees on the potty.

Potty at regular times throughout the day. Spend like 10 minutes chilling and reading on the potty especially at typical poop times (my daughter always goes after breakfast).

That said, my (21 month old) daughter has been peeing and pooping on the potty several times a day for months, but still goes in her diaper or undies occasionally. We did "potty learning" so it has taken much longer than any "3 day method"

My LO was 20 months when we potty trained, so not much older. She was just ready and displaying all the signs. We did the 3 day method and it worked like a charm. you never know until you try!

We tried at 18 months, it was kind of a fail but we could tell DS is almost ready and tried again at 20 months... it worked! It's never too early to start. Even if you put him on the potty and he does what he should sometimes, it still adds up to him being in wet or dirty diapers less, and so less rash! Day care was pretty supportive, hopefully yours is too and you can ask them to also start getting him familiar with the potty.

My daughter started to show interested around then, we sat for fun/ect. but nothing serious. We didn't day potty train until she was 25 months old and knew she was ready, she would tell us most times when she had to go at this point.

Honestly, if he's suffering from diarrhea from teething (guessing this is causing the rash) I don't think he will have the reaction time necessary to get to the potty and you will be dealing with a LOT of messy accidents.

We introduced the potty at almost 22 months, home and day care. She loves to sit on it, but has only gone once, which was a fluke. She isn't ready at all. I mean no point in training her when she can't pull her pants down.

We bought a potty at that point as just a fun thing to play with. She'd get it and pretend to sit on it and we'd all have fun. It was still a full year before she was ready, though.

I think it's possible! We were playing around with the potty at that point but not really training. I would wonder if an 18 mo can really pull pants up and down successfully....

@jetsa: Aside from the occasional pee/poop on her potty, not much. Their daycare needed to get her into the toddler room, but they needed her to be potty trained. They tried it, and it worked! Best wishes!

@jetsa: We are doing a potty "learning" approach. I sit him on there after meals and naps and read him a book to keep him entertained and tell him he can do wees or poos and make a fuss if he does. If we have any nappy free time during the day and he does a wee on the floor or in the bath or whereever I NEVER tell him off... I just say neutrally "your doing a wee E. You did a wee." so he associates what he is doing with that word. Seems to be going ok so far. I would LOVE him to be trained by the time bub #2 is here but not fazed if he isn't.... I'm not worried about regression... there is always "something" that could trigger regression and there is a chance there will be no regression at all! Goodluck.
