I gained 15, but once kid was born I never slept again so I actually gained after she was born!

@Mrs. Champagne: Your numbers are what my "ideal" would be:)
@youboots: You make a good point:) I have researched it a lot and the only issue that could arise from the paleo diet in pregnancy is the body going into ketosis a lot from lack of carbs. Pre pregnancy, I had maybe 2 servings of fruit a day and that was pretty much my carb load. Since changing back over to paleo, I do not limit my paleo carbs at all. I eat a lot of fruit every day and I also usually have a sweet potato or steamed butternut squash with a meal most days of the week so I can make sure I steer clear of ketosis. Oh and the other concern is that you are more likely to fail a GD test when paleo. This is bc your body has been clean and not digesting tons of sugars and processed stuff. And then you dump that drink into your system and it's a little tougher on your body...The numbers can make it look like a fail even though it's really not GD, just a reaction to the sugar dump. So I'll definitely be mentioning it to my doctor next week so we're all on the same page:)
@sarac: I am with you - I lean more toward thinking we really do have a lot more control over things than we may want to believe sometimes! I will admit that in the first trimester I had so many food aversions to healthy stuff - spinach/salad made me want to hurl - and so I had to just eat normally...And I was fortunate that I didn't really pack on weight....So I kind of kept enjoying myself - cheese! English muffins! - and if we went to a restaurant and I wanted shrimp and grits, I ordered it! I mean I wasn't eating fried stuff, I was probably just eating normally but it's been so long since I've eaten like that - a burger WITH a bun and cheese (GASP!) - and it was fun but I know that it kind of caught up with me. I am not someone who can just eat whatever and be all lithe and lovely. I always have to watch what I eat, and I felt so much better on paleo bc I felt like I was eating healthy but I finally was satiated as well. And so I reverted back to that, and my body just runs better on that cleaner fuel. So I will let you know how I fare for the last part of my pregnancy and how much I was able to control!

I just wanted to thank everyone for posting all of your experiences:) And thank you for not judging me for worrying about it! I was a little worried I'd get backlash about a) the Paleo thing and b) trying to cap my weight gain. I appreciate so much all of your advice and taking the time to share your own stories and feelings

I was 115 pre-preg but honestly that was down 5 from my normal weight as I had just gotten married. I gained 40. Lost all but 10 immediately. By a year pp I was down to 120 without working out or anything but I've slowly gained back 8 lbs since weaning. I'm not where I'd like to be for sure.

@PrincessBaby: I think it's honestly really unfortunate that you'd worry about being judged for wanting to cap your weight gain at a healthy amount. I think that our weight gain is very much under our control. I think that the problem for most people is the standard American diet - high in carbs, highly processed, high in calories. Plus the fact that for most of us, exercise is something we have to schedule in around our already way too busy lives - most cities aren't set up with walking or other kinds of active transport in mind. Lots of us grew up eating crummy food, and viewing physical activity as something we have to do BECAUSE we ate badly - not because we love to do it or even because it's just a part of our daily lives.
And that is a ton of stuff to struggle against when you're trying to gain the right amount of pregnancy weight.

I was 133, and a very active runner. I gained 40 with LO #1. I actually didn't gain too match throughout until the very end. With this pregnancy I started at 136 and I'm up 15lbs at 30 weeks. I suspect I'll gain the same amount and at the same rate just like last time by delivery date
pineapple / 12053 posts
i gained 21 lbs with DD, but i was about 5-10 lbs over what my active weight was. i was actually more in shape during pregnancy than right before because i was walking a ton and taking barre. i treat myself better during pregnancy i guess!
grapefruit / 4819 posts
I'm pretty thin to begin with (a BMI of 20-20.5) and I gained exactly 32 lbs with each pregnancy. With my first, it was a more gradual weight gain, with my second, I had gained around 20 lbs by about 16 weeks and freaked out! Didn't change my eating habits though and it all balanced out to end up at 32 lbs total. I think that's just what my body wants to gain regardless of what I do!
pineapple / 12566 posts
I don't know my BMI, but I started pregnancy 1 at about 120lbs and gained 29lbs. I started pregnancy 2 around 112lbs and gained somewhere between 40-45. So I think my body needed to make up for the fact that I was at my skinny weight and put on the extra weight for the second baby, since I ended up at about the same weight at the end of both pregnancies. With LO1 I bounced back really fast. With LO2, I was back in prepreg clothes within 2 months, but my stomach is definitely squishier.

Before getting pregnant, I imagined that the weight gain was mainly about food and exercise choices. Now I feel like you can do it all "right" and still have limited control of what your body does. Due to my super healthy lifestyle, I expected to gain at the bottom end of the range. It looks like I will end up at the top of the range instead.
I started very close to you (within normal at 125).
At 34 weeks I am up 30 lbs.
at 24 weeks I was up 18 lbs.
First trimester I had to give up most exercise, except lots of walking, due to severe morning sickness. Once I started to feel better, I returned to yoga--actually 3 times a week instead of once a week--so I can maintain some fitness through the pregnancy. I went back to my simple weight lifting routine until I hurt myself. I just don't want to feel out of shape when I finally get to lose weight.

I gained most of it earlier on in 2nd trimester, like 20 lbs. Then I was diagnosed with GD and actually lost a little due to dieting. Then barely gained till the end where I went up another 2-3 lbs max. Total I gained about 30
pomelo / 5791 posts
I was at a healthy weight pre-preg with DS and gained almost 45 pounds. My doctor said it was fine. I barely even ate more than normal.
I should also note....my baby was over 9 pounds.

I gained <20 both times. Started at 120, 5"4'. Didn't do anything special, so I do think that's just what my body needs. However, if I had been on a track to go over the recommendation, I would have made an effort to eat well and be more active (though, chasing a toddler around was a pretty active job that second time.)
kiwi / 659 posts
I started in the normal BMI range and ended up gaining 28lbs total. I gained 4lbs in the 1st tri, then it was around 1 lb per week until the end. I remember my OB saying that I might gain closer to 35+ since I'm on the petite end. I ended up tracking my gain kind of obsessively In the end, it didn't really matter bc I EBF and lost everything by 2-3 months pp. I know it can be stressful, and I probably won't take my own advice, but try not to stress too much mama! It will come off!

@PrincessBaby: It's such a weird feeling to be gaining so much weight and have it be a good thing! I gained 37 during my first pregnancy (although a few of those pounds were a weird leg swelling situation that resolved through absurd amounts of sweat after I had my DD).
I tracked mine week by week so I can tell you weeks 17 to 34 were where I gained the majority of the weight. It sounds strange, but I only gained couple pounds after week 34. My belly was getting HUGE and I certainly wasn't watching what I was eating but I think just the act of growing a whole human was taking all my calories. I've heard that's actually pretty common from several other moms. So don't freak out if you seem like you're gaining really quickly and getting "off track" because it's likely your weight may plateau in later pregnancy.
eggplant / 11716 posts
I started on the high end of a normal BMI and gained 43 lbs the first time around. But I gained all my pregnancy weight "the wrong way", haha. I gained over 33 lbs in my first two trimesters when most women gain very little. And then I gained only 10 lbs in my last trimester--the last few weeks I didn't gain at all.
I didn't change my eating habits at all, but I was very very sick the first half of my pregnancy so I was basically immobile 24/7--I either sat in a chair or laid in bed 24/7. So I probably only "needed" 1000 cals a day but was eating 2000. Then I continued eating 2000 during the second half of my pregnancy, but then I was normally active--grocery shopping, walking, just being a normal person who isn't sick.
My doctor started "complimenting" me on my "noticeably better eating habits" which made me so mad, since I was eating the same. grrr.

@PrincessBaby: I don't think there is anything wrong with watching your weight while pregnant. Pregnancy isn't a hall pass to do whatever you want. If you gain weight in a healthy way it will fall off quicker PP. I lost all my Baby weight PP before my 6 week OB appt.
nectarine / 2210 posts
I was around 120 before getting pregnant and gained around 25, although it was mainly in the first 2 trimesters. Like others have said once I has GD I actually lost weight at first. And actually while my GD diet wasn't full paleo it was close since I really limited my carbs and sugars.
watermelon / 14467 posts
I'm 5'5 and I started pregnancy at 145. I gained quickly, about a pound a week up until I was diagnosed with GD. I ended up losing about ten pounds in a month and had a nurse comment on how I should be gaining, not losing, but they were the ones who put me on the diet. Overall, I gained 30-35 pounds (I can't remember) and I'm still hanging on to ten of them 15 months later. I'm still breastfeeding though, so I think they will come off when I wean and can lower my caloric intake.

@PrincessBaby: I'm 5'7" and I started out at 114, and gained exactly 35 pounds. I was also a little freaked out because I had gained 30 pounds by about 34 weeks, but the weight gain really leveled off in the last 6-7 weeks (I went 8 days late) and I even had a few appointments where I lost a pound or so from the previous appointment. I should note that even though I was due at the end of August in the South, I never really swelled at all, even toward the end. I would imagine that someone who swells more might not experience the leveling-off pattern at the end of the third tri.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
I think it varies for sure. I'm "overweight" but gained almost 40 both times. Mostly in the 17-34 week range. By OB was fine with it. And it all came off immediately.
apricot / 390 posts
I was somewhere around 135 pre-pregnancy, in the "healthy" BMI zone. I lost a few pounds in the 1st tri due to MS, and right now at 34 weeks I've gained 23 lbs. I seem to be carrying small (that's what everyone says anyway), but I've measured on track almost the whole time and gained pretty steadily since around 15 weeks. I don't watch what I eat too much, but I've definitely noticed a decrease in my appetite in the 3rd tri, however I'm still gaining about a pound a week.
nectarine / 2460 posts
I was up 23 lbs at 24 weeks and went on to gain 40 total. I gained a ton in the first tri probably from eating all the time to keep the nausea at bay. I started focusing on healthy eating in the second tri and I'm sure it helped some, but I still went well over my goal of staying under 30. But now at 5 months PP (with a healthy 7.5lb babe) it's all gone without any diet or exercise. So maybe it wasn't as big of a deal as I'd thought. I think as long as you keep making healthy choices you'll be fine
kiwi / 548 posts
I'm 5' 5" and pre-pregnancy I weigh right around 120. I have had three pregnancies and each time gained between 20-25 lbs depending on what shoes, what time of day I was weighed, etc. I don't work out during pregnancy at all, but live in an urban area so I do walk a fair amount and eat what I would call normally (wide variety of foods, lots of fruits and veggies but also have dessert after dinner every night). I can't remember specifics, but I know most of my weight gain/body changes were in the second trimester. With my most recent pregnancy my underwear got tight and super uncomfortable and my legs felt like they were getting chubby in some maternity jeans in my second trimester, but toward the end of the pregnancy my legs and butt had slimmed back down (undies were comfy again) and my weight was just in my stomach. I wouldn't worry too much!
pear / 1974 posts
I started out at around 128 - i lost 5lbs in the first tri and in the end, ended up gaining a total of 24lbs. I didn't work out or eat healthy at all during my pregnancy which is actually not normal for me, i worked out 4-5 days a week before i got pregnant and ate very healthy. I lost all of it while nursing the first 2 months but put 5lbs back on when i stopped! boooo
grapefruit / 4988 posts
I tracked obsessively, so I know exactly how I gained. I started at 117 (I'm 5'1") which is a tiny bit above my happy weight. I gained 5 lbs by 14 weeks, 20 lbs total by 28 weeks, and 34 lbs by 39 weeks (when LO arrived). I ended up losing it all plus 10 by about 10 months post-partum, and now it's crept up again so I am basically back to where I started.
I ate super healthy and worked out 3-4 times per week religiously, plus I have a walking commute of about 3 miles per day, and I still gained at the high end of what is recommended. I was crazy about it but I think my body just needed that weight. I am going to try really hard not to be so tough on myself the next time. I look back and I don't know if it was worth it.
cantaloupe / 6869 posts
I started out at 172, which for my height is a BMI of 23. I was really fit, though, so muscle played a big part. By the end of my first tri, I was down 6 lbs. By the end of the second tri, I was up 9 lbs. By the time I gave birth at 40+1, I was up 29 lbs (actually I can't remember if it was 28 or 29 so I'll round up).

Gained the exact same in both pregnancies.
Pregnancy 1- started out 114 (am 5'2)
Gained 4, 16, 10 for a total of 30. Worked out til 30 weeks. Was on strict bed rest from 30-37 weeks and gave birth at 38+4. Took me 4 mos to lose it all.
Pregnancy 2 - started out 112
Gained 3, 16, 11 for a total of 30. Worked out til 28 weeks. Was on modified rest from 30-37 and have birth at 38+2. Am 1m pp and have to lose 15 still which is consistent with my loss pace last time. I haven't stated working out yet.
I think your body just does what it is supposed to do and you will gain what you are supposed to within reason. Dieting during pregnancy doesn't sound like a good idea.
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
@winniebee: paleo isn't a "diet" really, it's how I lived my life food-wise for 2 years prior to this pregnancy. Many people who adopt the lpaleo lifestyle and choose to eat whole high-quality foods and cut out processed foods continue to do so while pregnant, I just had major food aversions that prevented me from maintaining a paleo lifestyle. And then I fell off the bandwagon bc it was a fun break but I feel a lot better when I'm not eating gluten and processed foods and I truly believe I'm making a positive diet change for my baby, or else I wouldn't be doing it. I agree, dieting while pregnant isn't a good idea, but just wanted to be clear that paleo isn't a diet
I was worried when I started this thread that it might get misconstrued by those unfamiliar with paleo so I'm just clarifying!
ETA: Oh and a major benefit of paleo IS weight control by default, bc you're not putting crap into your body! I just wanted to add that bc obviously that's all part of it:)

I recently read an article about pregobesity, which occurs when you gain a lot of weight during pregnancy, don't lose it all, become pregnant again, gain more, rinse and repeat...so it is a very real concern, especially after multiple pregnancies in quick succession.
I also saw a very interesting "demo" on BBC about pregnancy weight gain and what percentages are attributable to, like baby, amniotic fluid, etc...it was really eye opening.
I gained more than I would have liked and it was because I was eating full fat ice cream towards the end, for no other reason other than I gave myself a free pass during pregnancy. My son is 4 and I am still struggling with weight loss. My metabolism isn't what it used to be when I was 25 and could eat whatever I wanted as well.
apricot / 483 posts
I gained a LOT, but in retrospect I think the majority was water weight. I was a balloon by the time I delivered with DD. I started at 160 lbs (5'10") and put on 60 lbs! I was heavier than by 6'5" DH by the end of it. Ended up losing 40 lbs the first month PP solely due to BFing (plus my appetite plummeted), and the last 20+ came off within 6 months total. I wasn't in any rush to get it off.
I'm 11 weeks now, and am only up 3ish lbs so I think I'm on better track this time. We'll see though. I'm hoping to cap it more around 40 lbs rather than getting up to 60, that was absolutely miserable.
pomelo / 5132 posts
I am about 5'5, and with DS, I started at 119 and gained about 25ish lbs. This time, I started at 112/113 (which is more normal for me), and I've gained about 3lbs at 10 weeks. I feel like I bounced back fairly quickly (although my boobs took almost a year to go down a bit, so that altered my body perception), so I am hoping to be able to get back in shape this time as quickly.

I had a healthy BMI pre-pregnancy. I gained 19 pounds total. I was pretty sick for most of my first trimester and the beginning of my third. The last time I weighed myself (last week?), I'd lost 7 pounds but I'm sure some of that was water weight that won't stay gone. I'm 11 days postpartum.
grapefruit / 4800 posts
I gain a lot at first. But then it stalls late second early third tri. Then I gain again at the end. It's happened that wAy both pregnancies. I'm up 16 lbs by 18 weeks but then only gain 25 lbs total.

I'm 5'5 and 120 pre-pregnancy. For my first I gained 27 lbs. Now I'm in week 21 for #2 and I have gained around 12 lbs so far.

This is my first pregnancy but so far I have gained around 8-10lbs at 20 weeks. I 5'8 and my start weight was 141. I was also in really good shape before getting pregnant. My goal is to try and stay under 35lbs. I left to go traveling in 2007 and when I came home 2.5 years later I was over 30 lbs heavier than when I left. It took me a couple of years but I finally managed to lose all that weight plus some. I have a fear of gaining all that weight back because I know how hard it was to lose it the first time. So, I just try and stay focused on the fact that I'm growing a baby and that my body is doing what it's suppose to!! Not just eating bad and drinking to much beer lol.
grapefruit / 4418 posts
I gained 20 lbs during pregnancy but 5 coming off the poll 2 months prior, so I say 25! I gained the majority at the end of the second trimester into the third. I really didn't gain much at the beginning. Everyone's different, though. Your body will gain what baby needs.

Am I really the only one who gained 500 pounds while pregnant? I tried to exercise but it hurt to walk 10 feet. I woukd take short walks and mall walk. And I had lost 50 pounds prior to getting pregnant so I just let myself eat what my body was craving. I didn't go crazy. But ya... I'm giving myself a pregnancy hall pass. When else in your life do you get to eat whatever the heck you want and grow a "cute" bump? Although this mentality is exactly why I gained 500 pounds lol.
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
@anonysquire: I gave myself a hall pass too, and happily! I have never been good about keeping up with an exercise routine but I actually walked WAY more while pregnant than I did when I wasn't. I ate normally, but if I wanted to eat a lot or some unhealthy stuff..you better believe I did! I didn't deny myself anything I wanted and I thoroughly enjoyed it Pregnancy is hard enough on your body, why not indulge a little!
FWIW, I gained about 35 pounds total and lost it all immediately. I was in my pre-preg jeans at 2 weeks and was having to buy new (smaller) pants before I was done with my 6 week maternity leave. My thoughts are that a body is going to do what it wants to
