Our dog spent her first few years living in the city (no backyard, living in a condo) and we're glad she got that experience instead of always living in the suburbs! She needed to get out and walk all the time which socialized her really well with other dogs and people. Actually she loved it so much that now when we go for a walk she wonders where everyone is, so we take her to crowded farmers markets where she can be around other dogs.

Like @spaniellove our dog has had his start in a condo and we are really glad he has. He never runs away from us because he's always been on a leash. We can actually take him outside without a leash and he will do his business and then come back inside. He's a pretty chill dog and we don't need to take him for walks for behavior reasons (which is nice in the winter here!). He also really likes people/other dogs because we are around so many different people in our area.

Oh and our dog is 55 pounds and we live in a 900 square ft place.

Like other posters have said, not having a yard has forced us to be good about taking our dog for walks 3x a day. Dogs really need exercise and time on the leash to set a good a good foundation for obedience. Also, it's great than in a lot of cities there are dog parks and restaurants that are ok with dogs in outdoor eating spaces. I don't think that is common in the burbs.
