I was prescribed provera, but didn't send up taking it because my period finally showed up on its own. My cycles were 50-60 days.

I took clomid 50mg on days 3-7 and ovulated on day 26, did not get pregnant.

I then switched OBs since the first one was not monitoring. I again took clomid on days 3-7, but 100mg this time. The new OB monitored this cycle and I ovulated on day 20 (I was also temping and taking OPKs). I got pregnant with one baby I don't think clomid ups your chances of twins all that much...maybe by 10% if I remember correctly? Also, I did not experience any side effects on clomid.

@mrskansas: I did, just because I wanted the most data possible. I was worried I had PCOS since my cycles were so irregular and I had a few other symptoms as well. My new OB did a blood draw to check hormone levels, sent my husband for a semen analysis, and did an ultrasound to look at my ovaries. Based on how they looked, she was able to tell me I would ovulate within a week, and she was right!

I have atypical PCOS - meaning I don't have any of the hormonal markers but I have cysts on my ovaries.

Prior to using Clomid, I used provera a few cycles to get my period during long annovulatory cycles. I usually got my period either on days 9-10 or right after the last pill.

Once I didn't get pregnant using provera only, OBGyn prescribed 50mg of Clomid, plus estradiol, metformin, and progesterone vaginally. I took Clomid days 3-7, then estradiol after that, then the vaginal progesterone. I took metformin each day. Cycle 1 of Clomid, I ovulated on day 14, didn't get pregnant. Cycle 2 of Clomid, I ovulated on day 14 and did get pregnant with my singleton daughter! No side effects from provera or vaginal progesterone. I did have crazy night sweats from the first cycle of Clomid, none for the second.

@mrskansas: You're welcome! Clomid was the miracle for us. But I should also say we had no other issues. My DH's SA came back normal and I had no blockages. We also had my age (28) at the time on our side. I just don't ovulate on my own!

I took provera for 10 days and then several days later got my period. It was somewhat heavier then normal and lasted a day or so longer then normal. I tried 1 cycle of clomid I produced 3 follicles and my lining was 7.5mm I did not conceive that cycle and my doctor switched me to femera to hopefully reduce the number of follicles I produce and get my lining over 8 mm. On clomid the worst side effect was hot flashes and night sweats, which I am still having night sweats 3 months later, no idea if its linked or not. I was monitored because of the PCOS and my bodies ability to go from not ovulating to over-ovulating

I took 10 days of provera to end a long cycle, and on CD88 I got AF. my last provera was on the 1st and AF came on the 5th so not too bad, can't remember side effects. then I took clomid days 3-7. every cycle I took it I got hot flashes while taking it, and again at the end of the cycle, and it made me crazy moody those days. I didn't like how I felt on it but I knew it was limited days each month and then it was over. I usually ovulated around days 17-18, it can push your usual ovulation a bit, though I had no real normal then (now my normal is 15-17). I didn't need provera again since clomid did get me to ovulate those cycles.

my first go round I did 50mg, ended in chemical. I did two more cycles at 50mg, one BFN and another chemical. fourth cycle I did 100mg, increased side effects, successful single pregnancy. this was all unmonitored as I got the rx from an NP and was starting with an RE while taking it (so I did all the initial testing, HSG, SA for DH, all that good stuff). we just did OPKs and tried to time it.

second time around ttc, I had regular 32-35 day cycles post partum and managed to get pregnant on my own, lost it to chemical and ended up talking to a new RE about why I kept losing them. much more testing later, they really had no idea and suggested we try clomid and IUI which included monitoring. I did maybe 4 clomid cycles with IUI (including trigger shots), I believe 3 BFN and 1 more chemical. this time it seemed the clomid was making my lining too thin and I think it may actually have been part of the problem. that's why I would prefer to do it monitored even though monitoring is a giant pain. in the end that time, they wanted us to move to IVF because the RE's only guess was embryo quality (and in Boston it would have been mostly covered). we couldn't because we were moving states but in happy luck we ended up with our second successful pregnancy on our own.

so in short I think clomid can be great, it really seemed to help when my cycles were a mess trying for #1. but I also had more of a negative experience the second time so monitoring can be useful, it may not be the right drug for you (some REs will also prescribe Femara off label, mine didn't but it is supposed to be better for your lining). I did get a BFP 4 times on it, but only 1 stuck, which is probably my issues vs a clomid issue.

I think it's worth trying because it's much more low key than most treatments! I hope it works for you!!

My lining was at 7.5mm and my doctor wants it over 8mm during the first cycle. So it had thinned slightly and would probably only get worse over time

I'm currently in the middle of my first monitored clomid cycle. My midwife will do two monitored cycles at 50mg each before referring you to a RE. I have borderline PCOS. I have all the hormonal symptoms, but blood work is normal, although slightly elevated numbers. I had an ultrasound on cycle day 3 and they said it looked highly suspicious of polycystic ovaries. I took clomid days 3-7, and luckily I had zero symptoms whatsoever. I was really nervous about that. Today is day 12, and am waiting for a positive opk. I have another ultrasound scheduled on Tuesday to see what happened. My midwife counseled me that if pregnant, I have a 1 in 10 chance of having twins, 1 in 100 of having triplets, and 1 in 1000 for quads. We had to agree to the risks before she would proceed.
