It is related to the caramel apples. The plant identified in the recall Bidart was a supplier for the caramel apples. Listeria was found in their facility. This widens the recall to include all of their gala and granny smith apples and those of unknown origin. However currently illness has not been tracked to plain apples.

@Corduroy: it might be linked but they are recalling the plain apples too now It was just updated. And rather safe then sorry regardless if plain ones haven't been linked yet.

@BabyPenguinXO: Correct, plain apples are being recalled and have been found to have listeria. I am not saying they are safe or should be eaten. Just that there is a link to the caramel apples.
Additionally it is quite possible that the caramel allows for listeria growth in a way that plain apples don't. That will be studied closely in the next few months.
