(Edit: I started this specifically for the open trunk space SUV & hatchback drivers have but some great info regarding unsecured pets & objects regardless of car type has been added so I wanted to be sure everyone saw this great info!)
After yesterdays post about rear-facing until age 4 I was doing some reading on car safety in general, specially unsecured objects & projectiles in the case of an accident. We have a Ford Escape so my first thought was things that are in the *open* "trunk" space, like the stroller, groceries, and anything else we might be taking along with us, and what was I to do with G's backless booster when he's not in the car?!
I posted about it in a car-seat safety group I'm in & got some great feedback from some techs so I thought I'd share!!!!!
1. For your older lo's always have them buckle their seat belt when they get out of the car... this will secure their booster! Some of you may already do this but I seriously never thought of it!
2. Get some ratchet straps, cargo nets, or cargo covers for the items in the back. Tbh I don't feel that nets or covers would be strong enough in the case of a high-speed collision (God forbid) so we'll be getting some ratchet straps for ours.... Right now I'm using bungees but I was informed that in a high impact collision they could snap & become harmful! (oops) I think I'll keep using them until we can get the ratchet straps though! (we'll be connecting them to the framing that attaches the backseat to the car... unless someone knows a better way). Of course the ratchet straps are a bit inconvenient to always do BUT the thought of our stroller crushing us or the kids is enough for me to do it!
3. Use a cargo organizer or large duffel bag to contain items like groceries or other loose items! I think I'm going to get something like this b/c the cargo organizers I've found thus far are all open & I want something I can secure & close!

4. Pet bars! I've heard that IF they are bolted into the frame of the vehicle they are a good solution as well!!! If they aren't bolted they run risk of coming loose & being harmful as well! For us, having the ability to transport large items, sans kids, with the fold down seats is a must so we won't be going this route... it could be a good one for some though!
If anyone else has some things to add that you've done PLEASE do!
(I put this in parenting (general) since the focus is safety for the bebe's but please move it if there's a better board for it thx)
