For those of you who use your crock-pots, do you leave them on all day when no one is at home? I really want to try out some recipes, but I am terrified of leaving it on all day without anyone home to monitor it!

I want to use our crockpot but I'm scared of this too! I've only used it to make applesauce when I'm home.

I leave mine on, but I'm also one of those people who leaves the dryer on so...
honeydew / 7909 posts
That's pretty much the only time I use it... So dinner is done when we get home.

@mrsbookworm: Like the clothes dryer? See, I wouldn't even bat an eye at throwing some clothes in the dryer on my way out the door. But for some reason I worry about the crock-pot!
@swedishfish: Good to know I am not the only one!

@mrsbookworm: haha, I leave the dryer on so why can't I leave the crockpot on?

i leave it on. having one with a timer that switches to "warm" makes me feel better!

Yes, I leave mine on. My mom always did when I was a kid so I never think twice about it. I usually have it set on low.

@buffalove: Oooooh, I didn't know that was an option (MIL bought us 2 crock-pots . . .)
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I have a special cord attached to mine, so I can remotely turn it on and off.

@swedishfish: Yes. 2. *sigh* One big one and a smaller one. *scratcheshead* I just don't understand the thought process! She also bought us a toaster over . . . uh, I have never in my life used a toaster oven! It is still unused.

Yes, I leave mine on low and on a timer for 9 hours, it switches to warm afterwards.

I leave mine on low all day while I am out of the house. I've never felt uncomfortable with it. I hope I am not inviting disaster! Now you've got me thinking.

I leave ours on low so that I can come home to dinner all done and ready to eat.
I used to leave the dryer on but I don't any more. Our neighborhood's houses are horribly designed for the dryer vents -- they travel the length of my living room, and there have been numerous fires started because of lint in the lines catching. After my ex-friend lost her dogs and cats in an electrical fire while she was out of the house, I figure it's not worth chancing their safety.

Of course! Mine has a timer so I can set it & then it switches to warm.

@MsLipGloss: I love our toaster oven. I hate regular toasters

Yep, I leave it on! Someone on here I remember set up a foscam to watch their crock pot! I don't remember who it was though.
papaya / 10473 posts
Ours all switch to the warm setting when the cooking time is done.
@MsLipGloss: *hangs head in shame* We have FIVE crock pots. In my defense, DH and I both had one when we got married, we have a triple one for entertaining, and different sizes are good for different things. We live and die by crockpot dinners since our schedules are so wonky!

@mrskc: That was me! I can watch the crockpot on my phone, it's a little excessive, but it keeps me from going nuts.

I am too chicken to use either a crockpot or the dryer:(. I saw a commercial for those connecting crockpots-so cool! And I briefly debated if the coolness would help me overcome my fear. It did not:(

I leave it on but I neurotically move it as far away from every other object as possible LOL
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@LindsayInNY: No, it has a separate cord, with a separate control mechanism.

@swedishfish: @Smurfette: I don't know what to do with a toaster oven! Every time I see it (it is on the floor in the pantry), I just sort of give it the stink eye, and the *I am watching you* hand motion from Meet The Parents.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@MsLipGloss: I use it cook things instead of turning on the whole oven. Frozen garlic bread for DH and I, is two pieces, so they cook in there instead. Then we use it to toast bread, like you would a toaster.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
Yes, I leave it on all day for the 6 or 8 hour setting. I wouldn't use the 4 hour setting because it switches to a warming setting if no one turns it off and the food would continue to cook. I am not worried about the appliance being on all day.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
I leave it all on all the time, but I do the dryer too. My mom always had the crockpot going all day so it never worried me.
For those that have a crock pot with a timer, which one? I just bought a new one and I realized it doesn't have this feature & I would love it.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
I leave it on all day often. We usually put a metal cookie sheet under it to catch any rogue drips or overboils but that's only every happened once in 10 years.

@Lulu Mom We have a Hamilton Beach 6 qt slow cooker that I love. It's programmable and goes to warm when then timer goes off.

Definitely! I was so scared the time I did that with dry ribs, though. I feel okay if the crock pot is full of liquid but for some reason I thought that just putting my rubbed ribs in there would make the pot spontaneously combust. So, I thought leaving them in there, while we weren't home all day, was the best decision ever...

It's this:
We go this route because we're out of the house at 6:30 and not home until more than 10 hours later, so I put the food in frozen and turn it on high for 6 hours beginning at noon.
