What questions do you ask your lo about their day? What was your favorite thing, what didn't you like, what made you happy? What else do you ask?
Our daughter is transitioning to a new preschool and when we inquire about it she says, "I don't want to talk about it". We respect that but want to ask other ways.

"Who did you play with today?" "What did so-and-so have for lunch today?" "Who did you sit next do during snack time?" "Did you play outside today?" "What book did mrs x read today?"
We also ask one another "What was your favourite part of the day" but i'm not allowed to ask until bedtime.

I like doing highs and lows. One high and one low from everyone at the dinner table.

Those are all good ones that @Freckles: suggested. If you know that they are working on a particular themes (dinosaurs, plants, etc) you might direct your question in that manner - what did you learn about dinosaurs today?

What did you have for snack/lunch? Did you like it?
What story/book/song did the teacher do today? Was it a funny story or was it sad? Were there any motions that went along with the song?
What games did you play outside today? Who did you play it with?
The preschool DS is going to start at this fall has a weekly curriculum that has 1 color, 1 shape, 1 number, and 1 ZooPhonics letter/animal combination, so I figure I can ask questions around that since they will be doing something that reinforces that curriculum every day.

My DD doesn't like to talk about school at all, so I employ all of the above questions in attempt to get her to open up. Another thing that often works is bribery...... she is always eager to know what we did while she was at school, so often I'll say "I'll tell you one thing we did today and then you tell me one thing you did today."

Oh yeah, I've heard of parents who do a little ritual about day sharing that I thought was really cute - kinda like having coffee time with Mom or something. Like a cup of warm milk and some animal crackers or something before bedtime and having a little chat together.

I usually start with did you play outside today? Then the answer usually incites some fun F answers that lead into other questions.
Friday's are easy because it's show and tell so I will usually ask her about that and what everyone brought in.

I ask questions like "did you play puzzles or blocks today?" so that he has choices, rather than an open ended. They either go outside or go to the inside gym, so I'll ask which one he went to and I have a good idea of the toys at each, so I'll ask if he did X or Y after he tells me where he was.

No stone throwing, but the Kardashians do the whole "what was the peak of your day? what was the pit of your day?" This way everyone can share something great and also have space to vent.
I also loved it when my dad asked me to teach him something I learned at school.

These are all so great, thank you! I find I have to ask a ton of questions to get her to answer just one (I have to find the right one, apparently). So I asked if they read anything she liked and she told me they read THREE books: "One was about God. And these people kept beating him up and then they sent him to jail and then he wasn't dead anymore! And then we read two other ones but I don't know them. I want to read that God one again, though."
Gotta love kids.
