At what age do babies go into deep sleep as soo as they fall asleep??
I've been holding baby for twenty minutes while he's in light sleep then putting him down. But I'd love to get that time back!!

@Orchid: I am not sure! How old is your baby? You can start experimenting putting your baby down drowsy though, or even asleep, so he can start practicing going to sleep on his own. 20 minutes is a long time to hold a baby, even a sweet and snuggly one.

@Happygal: I've been trying to do that but he doesn't go to sleep! Do you put them down drowsy but awake in a swaddle??

@Orchid: how old is he? Honestly, it didn't take for a long time, but I kept trying....not every single time, but at least once a day. Depends on lots of things, like the age and personality. But yes, from birth until about 3-4 months, I would use a HALO sleep swaddle. She nursed to sleep for a long time--it wasn't until about 5-6 months that we started practicing going down drowsy on a more consistent basis.
Sorry--that answer is all over the place, but I don't think there's a clear right or wrong way to approach sleep! But if ain't working for you, it's worth examining to figure out how you can get things in a better place. You could also consider babywearing, but I found my girl was too alert to sleep through transitioning from my body to another place.

My babe is 2 mos and being able to put him down without waking him is still relatively new. One thing that helped is holding him close to my chest as long as I could while placing him elsewhere. He would get startled and wake himself with the change in altitude otherwise. I still hold my LO for at least 20 minutes or longer since he sleeps more soundly in my arms.

I never held my baby for naps intentionally, though it accidentally happened sometimes.... and I almost never tried transferring. However, the few times I did (or, during night feedings), I learned that if you can kind of move his arm without waking him up, then he is in a deep sleep and ready for transferring.
Eventually this will lead to some short naps though, because he will associate your arms as the place to sleep, instead of anywhere else. When he falls asleep in your arms and wakes up somewhere else, it will startle him to the point where he can't fall back asleep / connect sleep cycles. The website Lucie's List has some info on this, in case you're interested.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: this was working great for me, until this week. I'd nurse him to sleep and hold (while burping) until he was in a deep sleep, then he'd sleep for 2 or even 3 hrs. How's your little one sleeping?

@DesertDreams88: it seems like I should start trying right away. Thanks for sharing your experience.

We put a heating pad in the crib while she was falling asleep, then when we put her down it was still warm like our arms (obviously having moved the heating pad out before we put her down).

Sorry--missed your reply that he's 7 weeks. Little! Here's some resources you can check out:
The Happy Sleeper (my fav sleep book)
Science of Mom--blog and she has a book out
Healthy Happy Sleep--I have friends who have used her as a consultant and participate in her weekly nap chats. And here's her guide that I find very helpful: http://www.healthyhappysleep.com/developmental-sleep-guide/0-8-weeks/

@Orchid: he's sleeping pretty well at night. For about a month I have handled night duty entirely. He's gone from waking twice in MOTN to just once. Around 3/4 when he wakes I change him, nurse him and he's back to sleep. Some days he will wake at 5:30 am and be up, but today he slept until 7 am.
I don't have too many sleep cues for him, but he's pretty used to diaper change plus time in the glider means crib is next. Just now I used for the first time the Rainbow Relxation meditation track to put him down for a nap. Since my baby has reflux the only time I put him down in his crib or bassinet without holding him first is when he's been up for awhile and let's out a tension cry. Boom that's a cue for me that he will sleep anywhere and is super ready to go!
