That is so great. My pastor always tell parents not to be afraid to bring infants/children into service, even if they may cry or become fussy.

Not religious, but I have some serious respect for this guy.
Honestly, I could care less about this issue, but he gets major props for his stances on major issues and trying to steer the church away from focusing on the hot button social issues (abortion, gay marriage, etc).

I love the Pope. Although I agree with him on plenty of things - the dignity of the poor, living a life of service, social justice, etc.!

He's the first pope in a long time who actually seems like a reasonable guy.

That's pretty great. I felt a lot more comfortable baptizing C Catholic after he was named pope.

@loveisstrange: totally agree with you.
I've got major respect for him

He makes me feel even more proud to be Catholic. If Jesus were alive today, I think he'd be doing about the same thing. I love that he auctioned off his motorcycle for charity, sneaks out of the vatican at night dressed as an ordinary priest to feed the homeless, that he invited some homeless people to his birthday dinner, that he rides around in a Ford Focus instead of something fancy...I could go on an on.

Wonderful. I've seen the question come up a lot on baby boards and there's always mixed opinions on whether it's appropriate. Glad to see he made a positive comment to make church more inclusive for mommas and babies.

This is great! Moms should feel comfortable to feed their babies in any setting. Major respect!

Yea but then he had to go and make a big thing about how abortion is a sign of our "throw away culture" and women are throwing away babies like extra food.
I mean, I like him better than the last pope. But he's still a pope.

@Mae: not sure what you mean by "he is still a pope." Is it inherently a bad thing?
papaya / 10343 posts
@jedeve: Well that depends on your view of the Catholic church I suppose. He's the head of an organization that, in the best possible light, still leads the charge against contraception, abortion, and gay marriage. So while I appreciate that he has many good attributes and seems like a better role model than the last pope, he's still the head of an organization with those (thus far) unwavering stances.

@Mae: Well being a Catholic, I have a positive view of the church. I think it's a spiritual refuge for billions of people. I think it was one of the leading forces for social justice in the world.
Also those stances, while reflective of the hierarchy, don't really represent the laity: http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=19267.
Which is something Pope Francis has recognized, saying that those things you mentioned should not be the focus of the church: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/19/pope-francis-gay_n_3954776.html and asking "who am I to judge?" when it comes to people who are gay.
And he is currently commissioning a study review church practices in regards to some of those matters: http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/11/05/21320327-pope-francis-latest-surprise-a-survey-on-the-modern-family?lite

@jedeve: And yet just yesterday he called abortion horrific… http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/13/pope-francis-abortion_n_4587846.html
He's better than the other popes, no doubt. And maybe he will actually change the church's stances on these topics at some point. But until he does, he's still the head of an organization that condemns a lot of things I consider to be basic fundamental human rights.

I thought this was actually a policy that has been in place for a very long time.
