Obviously a traditional beef stew...but is there anything else exciting/different?
I have a pound of stew meat/beef that I froze a while back and I feel like getting it out but don't know what the heck to make!
Bonus points for crock pot usage!

This stew is so good! I usually make it in the crock pot, just brown the meat first. http://www.self.com/food/recipes/2009/11/beef-stew-with-butternut-squash/

@SweetiePie: This! Crock pot beef tips & gravy...it's so good and super easy.

@Foodnerd81: Oooh I like that it has squash for some added nutritional value. Perfect!
@lawbee11: So I don't even have to brown the beef before it goes in the crock pot?!? #yesImthatlazy.

@SweetiePie: Nope! I am super lazy and this is one of my favorite crock pot meals. I get the Ore-Ida steam n mash potatoes (you steam the potatoes in the mircowave then just add milk and butter) and Steamfresh broccoli and the meal is done!

@lawbee11: Perfect! I was thinking that egg noodles would be good with the gravy too (I have a weird toddler who doesn't like potatoes in any form - he may not be my child). And I was going to do frozen broccoli or green beans. Will make it tomorrow and let you know how it goes!

I've done a beef stroganoff in the crockpot that has gone over really well with everyone

My favourite crockpot meal is to chop an onion and some carrots. Add in 2 cans of mushrooms (or you could use fresh mushrooms), a can of cream of mushroom soup, and a pack of onion soup mix. Dump that all on top of stewing beef, cook on low for 8 hours. So good over rice or egg noodles.
Ha, I just looked at @lawbee11's link and it's more or less the same thing.

@blackbird: So I'm sure it's good, but I have a personal vendetta against stroganoff. Haha. It was one of those meals I didn't like as a kid and my mom made me sit at the table until I ate it. So to this day I COULD eat it but I'm like "nah".
@erinbaderin: Yes! I'm getting ready to make it now. I was going to add carrots to Lawbee'a recipe so I'm glad to see that you've done it and it works.

@SweetiePie: OMG SAME! I hated stroganoff as a kid. And it was always Stouffers.

@blackbird: My mom would make it and I didn't like the color of it. The creamy orange color, the way she made it. My mom is a great cook and there was nothing WRONG with it. But as a kid I was just like "nope" and it's stuck with me. I've had it as an adult and it's fine, but now I can't imagine making it myself!

@erinbaderin: @lawbee11: HUGE success!!! LO is gobbling it. He's a good eater typically but he's eating this with gusto! The beef is so tender and I added carrots and onions and they are SO good! Egg noodles are perfect with it. Green beans on the side. I feel like a real mom!
Oh and I found a Lipton soup packet that was BEEFY onion! I think it must add some extra beef flavor. So good!

@SweetiePie: I'm inspired- going to try this next time I see a deal on stew meat!

@Foodnerd81: I can only imagine how good this would be with potatoes. Yum! Mashed or roasted.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@SweetiePie: Oh good! I'm glad it was a hit. Yeah we make it with mashed potatoes and put the beef and gravy on top of the potatoes...so good. But I might try it with egg noodles soon

@SweetiePie: someone brought us trader joes instant mashed potatoes and they were really really good. I'm getting a bunch next time I go there and that will be even easier than noodles. (And I'm pretty picky about mashed potatoes and dislike most instant). I just really like that you don't have to brown the meat.

@Foodnerd81: ooooh I need to try those! My son (16 months) doesn't like potatoes. At all. Of any kind. It's super weird! Otherwise I totally would have made a potato! Maybe next time I'll still make potatoes for DH and I and a small side of noodles for him.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@SweetiePie: my kid doesn't like white potatoes either, except dhs grandmothers scalloped potatoes (so coated in cream and cheese- they are good!) But regular mashed or roasted or anything she won't eat. Sweet potatoes she will. Kids are weird.

@SweetiePie: Great news! I'm glad it was a hit, now I want to eat it - it will have to go on the list for next week.
I bet you could throw baby potatoes right into the crockpot and cook them along with everything else.

@Foodnerd81: ok I'm glad mine isn't the only weirdo! I'll give him the most perfect French fry and he will take a bite and then scrape it out of his mouth like it is dirt.
@erinbaderin: Good point about putting the potatoes in the crock pot! I bet that would be so good! The carrots today....ehrmagerd so good.

I threw a bag of thawed stew beef in my slowcooker with a can of cream of mushroom soup, some carrots and cut up potatoes. I was expecting gravy, but it came out soupy. Just drained and served. My daughters faourite meal right now.
