I have had my down coat since high school, so it's finally time for a new new one. I want to get one during the end of season sales.
I'd like it past my butt, and I live in the Midwest for cold level reference.
Thanks!

I have a really similar, hoodless, LE one to @winter_wonder 's. It looks like they discontinued it though, which is too bad because I got it in October 2013 and it still looks brand new. Definitely recommend this brand!

Mackage and Soia & Kyo (same parent company) both make stupidly expensive but phenomenally warm and beautiful down coats. They're Canadian and so high-quality and thick. I've had my knee-length down Mackage coat for 4 winters now and it looks like the day I bought it; I expect to get another 4 winters out of it for sure. And I live in NYC and walk around in the filth and snow and rain all winter.

@Ms. RV: I have this exact same jacket. Mind you I live in Australia and our winters are nowhere near as brutal as in the US (they're probably more like your fall weather!). The omni heat is soooo good, that jacket is not bulky in the slightest but I can wear a non-bulky sweater underneath and feel perfectly warm.

I have a Peak Performance Groa parka that I got on clearance at the end of last winter. It is by far the best and warmest coat I have ever had.

@FannyMae: I love the omni heat! I thought it was a marketing ploy at first but it is so warm. I actually only wear that jacket when I'll be outside for a while or it is well below freezing.

@winter_wonder: thanks! Bulk is important...I'm kind of petite, so I don't want to look like the stay puff marshmallow man!
@winniebee: how has the fur held up? Looks cute and warm!
@LCTBQE: never heard of it, but I will have to check it out
@rattles: of course this year our winter wasn't too bad!
@Ms. RV: my sister just got a Columbia

@Mrs. J: the fur still looks new! I've had it for a little over a year.

I don't look for warm as much as I look for windproof...after years of freezing my hands off in bulky gloves, I finally found windstopper gloves and they're actually pretty thin...so on that vein, I am also looking for a windproof winter coat (It's time to retire my current lands end one because the color I have is just too weird).

It's a cliché to recommend Canada Goose, but I finally bit the bullet and bought one because I was tired of being cold all winter (waiting on a train platform by the lake in Ontario) and it was totally worth the investment.

@LCTBQE: I live in NYC and my Canadian girlfriends got me into Mackage. I have bought a few discounted pieces at Nordstrom Rack but they never had the down coats there. I waffled for over a year about ponying up the money for one at Bloomingdales and finally did it at the last Friends & Family sale. SO FREAKING WORTH IT!!! It is so warm, when people are freezing I am usually sweating! And I get compliments from every friend I meet and even some strangers. It's just such a gorgeous coat!

Following! I'm definitely going to need one of these when we move to Chicago, brrrr

I'm in Boston and have gone through many different coats. For the last 5 years, I have been rotating a North Face metropolis (usually for temps above 25 or so) and a North Face arctic parka (for temps below 25, or during snow or heavy winds). The arctic parka really blocks out everything and the fur hood is great in cold wind.
This year, I decided I wanted a change so I just got a Marmot Montreaux to replace both of my North Face coats. It is a bit longer than both of them, it's lighter weight like the Metropolis, but it's a warmer down and has a fur hood like the Arctic Parka. I would honestly recommend any of these coats (but Metropolis only down to a certain temp).

@erinbaderin: my sister just got a Canada Goose coat and it makes me want one. She says she is so warm. But at this point in my life in really only outside with the little ones so if it is that cold I won't be out for long. So I can't really justify the cost.
Following because I am in the market for a new coat too.

+1 on Soia Kyo and Mackage! I have wool coats, but are really warm and I always get compliments on them.

@lamariniere: and @mrsjyw: Is breathable?

@Ms. RV: I definitely wear it on the coldest days here too. I constantly scour amazon for any deals on them but they don't always ship internationally.

@SugarplumsMom: it is. It's super warm though, so if it's not that cold and I wear too many layers, I get really hot!

I got a Patagonia down parka similar to this one when I moved to Wisconsin. It saw me through five winters and several polar vortices and still looked almost as good as new. Very lightweight too.

It's one of the few expensive clothing purchases I've made that wasn't on sale, but I thought it was definitely worth it.

@lamariniere: They sell that brand here and I may still be able to find a deal on it Thanks!

@SugarplumsMom: it's Swedish! We went into their shop over the weekend and they were still having lots of sales. A friend of mine found my parka in a different color and bought it for herself since she liked it so much.

@lamariniere: Oooooh! No wonder why I can find it here I was about to say that I can't find anything here. Haha.
