I am going to attempt to make LOs birthday cake. Regular fondant seems expensive, harder to deal with, AND doesn't even taste as good! Think that's true? If regular tastes better I'll suck it up.

I've never had marshmallow fondant but it has to taste better than regular fondant

Marshmallow fondant is okay. It definitely isn't horrible but most people just peel it off. I've used it with the understanding that people don't really like it and won't eat it. I made a Legend of Zelda shield cake with marshmallow fondant and it looked great but the fondant didn't get eaten. People kept apologizing too so I'd just be aware of that.
Also be aware of the temperature of your kitchen. I made it once in my father's super hot kitchen without AC and the heat made it really sticky and hard to work with (although not impossible).
Good luck! I had a lot of fun working with fondant.

I work with regular fondant b/c it's pretty easy. That being said, I don't eat it or expect anyone else too. DH will and that's strange to me. I would just use whatever you're more comfortable with and know that it probably won't get eaten.
