DH is dead set on having a rocking chair in the future nursery. Not a glider, not fabric covered. An old school rocking chair.
Anyone have one? Added plus for pics! Where can I even get one?!

I have mine from when I was a baby. My mom kept it all these years. I bought pads to put on it to make it more comfortable.
I would look at unfinished furniture places. I've seen them there when we got my son's wooden high chair.
Wood never goes out of style!

I'd look in antique shops for one.
Honestly.... Your DH isn't going to have his behind stuck in that chair for hours while nursing. What do YOU want to be sitting in?

Here's some old school wood & rattan rockers.

We had mine from when I was a kid that I upholstered pads for; however, it was way too upright and uncomfortable, so DH bought me a Dutalier rocker/glider on Craigslist.

I would shoot that idea down while you still can. I've spent HOURS in mine. Even had to spend half the night in it sometimes. No way I could do that if it was wood.

If you're going to be nursing, I'd consider pushing back on this! (unless you find a comfy rocking chair).
I have issues with them in general, because I have short legs and a long torso, so it's hard to find one where my feet touch the floor and the arms are the right height.
But I do have a platform rocker that was my grandmother's that is the perfect size for me.

don't do it!!!!! unless you're cool with hideous pads to try to make it tolerable. narrow wooden arms are miserable. there are some beautiful handmade rockers you could get for your house, but in the nursery, you want the most comfortable thing you can find.

We have a white wooden rocker with white eyelet pads. I ordered it on Amazon. I didn't like the look of gliders. I only nursed in it a few times but that's because we always nurse in the family room. I did rock her in the rocker in the early days. I still prefer the look of the rocker and think she'll like to sit in it when she's older. I got a matching nursing stool and it's not uncomfortable at all.

I'm going to agree with pp here...
My sister doesn't nurse and she has her husband's old rocker. I nursed in it one day and it was absolutely horrible. My son will often push off the side of our big comfy rocker and he did this in her rocker and hit his head on the wood. Crying ensued.... It also just felt really small and uncomfortable. I work full time, but I spend at least an hour with my son in the rocker every day. I nurse him almost exclusively in it. I think my husband sits in our rocker every other week - at most. He's usually down on the floor with our son playing.
With that said, I would hit up some antique stores! If you're going to go that route, I would at least get a really awesome vintage looking one!

@ShootingStar: I was just trying to add it up and I think I may have actually spent more than a few days worth of time in mine. My son is only 4 months.
Wait.. let me do the actual math...
Let's say that over his life he's averaged 6 feedings a day, he's been alive roughly 120 days, he nurses for 20 minutes each feeding. That's 2 hours in the chair every day for 120 days - meaning 240 hours. Wait that means that I've spent the equivalent of 10 days of my life with my butt in that chair? Is that right??? How is that even possible??

@oliviaoblivia: Good point... It's the one/only request he's had for that room though I just don't *love* the look of it in what I envision the room to be.
@MaryM: I'm short and never thought of that... Will definitely need to consider size/height!
@LBee: As you can see from my above comments, I'm torn. I know I'll be in it more than DH but he envisions rocking LO in it. I don't think he's factoring in the nursing part and time commitment? I don't love the look of it for the room really but it's the only thing he's asked for.
coconut / 8472 posts
@LBee: Haha, I kind of misspoke in my post. I meant that I spend hours in one sitting, lol. We have often done 2-3 hour naps with him in the chair. Two nights ago I almost had to spend the entire night there. DS was inconsolable due to teething and wouldn't let me put him down until after 1 a.m. I was about to just go to sleep for the night .

@LindsayInNY: It's a big decision! We had something like that for our wedding - the one thing my husband requested was so random (men...) and I just went with it. It was actually for a (rather expensive) food that I don't even eat. BUT, it felt so important that he was being involved and I felt like I had to oblige.
What about getting a comfy chair to replace one of your chairs outside your LO's room? Actually, I do all the rocking in our household and would HAPPILY get my husband a rocking chair if he was willing to promise me he'd do the rocking at night. I don't even want to add up the amount of time I've spent rocking him recently (4 month regression talking over here).

@ShootingStar: Last night I almost rocked myself to sleep.... yet DS was wide awake just staring at me, smiling behind his paci.

@LBee: I'm trying to think if there's a way to have BOTH a comfy glider and an old school rocker. Our place isn't that big so it might be happen. I'm wondering about maybe doing something comfy initially, while nursing, and replace it with a rocker when LO is older and not nursing? But we also plan for 2 so I dunno...

@LindsayInNY: Is there room in your room for a second chair?
We have a small traditional rocker in our room (because my mom downsized and I loved how short the chair was).
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
We have a super old one, and the only reason why I like it is that it isn't a traditional rocker, the chair is stationery and the seat moves.
pomelo / 5129 posts
@looch: sounds like a platform rocker...which I also prefer. The base of the chair doesn't move and it doesn't have the long runners a rocking chair has, but it has the same movement.
Gliders give me motion sickness.
bananas / 9229 posts
@MaryM: That would be the best option. I'll have to see if there's any way to make that work.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@MaryM: Could be, I have no idea of the proper name, as you can tell! I love it because the footprint is quite small.

If you pick out a rocker, are you going to order it online or will you get to try it out? I had a wooden rocker with fabric pads, and it was sooooo comfy! Too bad my little brother liked it so much he broke it...

Guess you can drive out to CT one weekend and let DH pick a rocking chair from Cracker barrel!
Or, you can try showing him this thread. I actually didn't use my glider much for nursing (since I moved to EPing by 3 months), but it's still my favorite chair in the living room and I sit on it every day!

@LindsayInNY: I was planning on using a rocker, the one that MIL used for DH. But the more I sat in it while pregnant, the more I realized that it was not going to be comfortable. We still have the rocker, it's just in the guest room.
I would suggest taking DH to go look at gliders, recliners, and rocking chairs. Let him sit in all the different ones and see what he really wants to spend a bunch of time in. I was dead set on using the rocker because I loved the look of it and its sentimental value (sounds similar to how you DH feels), but so glad my practical side won out. The rocking recliner we got is soooo comfortable. DH (and I) have fallen asleep rocking DD many a times.

Has he sat in a rocker for 30+ mins? I would take him shopping and let him sit and feel the difference. And if you are going to nurse, you get more vote in my opinion since you are the one that is going to be in the chair not him.

We have one that was given to us by friends. I did use it with DS and had a large pillow that I used for a cushion. It wasn't 100% comfortable but it was free and it worked so we didn't care

@Lbee: prompted me to come over and chime in on this thread! I did the math via BabyConnect and, in 14 weeks, I have spent time equivalent to over 14 days nursing. So, I think it's sweet that you want to honor your husband's preference, but get a comfy chair! I fractured my tailbone during delivery (2 hours of pushing, baby with a 99th percentile head circumference) and sitting down even on a comfy couch, bed, etc. was an absolute nightmare for the first 5 or so weeks. A hard wooden rocking chair? I couldn't have done it. Even beyond just nursing itself or MOTN wakeups, there have been many, many times where baby will only nap on me, falls asleep nursing and I don't want to risk the transfer when he hasn't napped well all day, etc. The first time that happens to your husband in the comfortable chair, he will be thanking you for resisting the wooden one! (My husband sat in our rocking chair with our son during a 1.5 hour nap this past weekend.)

I have to echo what the previous posters said. DH and I both spend so, so, so much time in the glider and have said on many occasions how glad we are that we splurged on a comfy, soft one.
We actually have 2 wooden rockers in other rooms - I use them for nursing occasionally, but they aren't so comfy. Also, as DS has gotten bigger and more wiggly, I worry about him bumping his head and kicking his feet on the hard wooden arms. In short, not a fan. If you were closer, I'd offer to let you take one of them off our hands

My baby isn't here yet, so I can't speak from experience, but we have an old school rocker in our bedroom like the one below. We also have a glider in the nursery.
If you can manage to have both, that would be my suggestion. That way your DH can rock the baby in the rocking chair like he imagines, but you can also have a comfortable place to nurse!
We bought the rocker at a furniture consignment store a few years ago.

Ah! My dh is the same! And I feel the same as pp's! I want something comfy! His parts had a couple old wooden ones and hd is convinced they are the best thing since sliced bread! I'm not sure how we will solve this, maybe put the old rocker in the living room and a comfy chair in the nursery....but then I'd have an old rocking chair in my living room....men, they are just so funny in what they focus on eh?

We had an old school rocker. It belonged to DH's great-grandmother. I refinished and reupholstered it when I was pregnant, to match the nursery. I like it so much more than a glider!
pear / 1503 posts
We went and sat in various chairs this weekend, and DH agreed with me that a fully upholstered glider (i.e. no visible wood) is the only way (for us) to go. So much more comfy (we're envisioning many hours of sitting there with baby) and the fact that it looks like a regular upholstered chair means we can use it in our family room after. Both come down to practicality for us, however, I happen to also like the look of upholstered chairs.

We have a bentwood rocker and love it! Now granted we did nurse in bed quite often, and I used a pillow when using the rocker. But I love it! It is fabric covered, but still "old school"

@Mrs. Lovejoy: aha moment! now I know what the rockers are called.

I have the rocker that was given to my mom at her baby shower while she was pregnant with me. It's solid wood and gorgeous. I spent lots of hours in it and still sometimes rock my 4 year old when she asks. It's not as uncomfortable as you'd think

We have DHs grandmother's rocking chair that she rocked her babies and grand babies in.
It was perfect for us - but DD was/is a great sleeper and I bottle fed.
