I've had so many root canals, they really aren't terrible. More irritating than anything! Just take some ibuprofen after and you'll be good. Honestly, the worst pain is the novocaine wearing off. My face tingles a LOT.

@sloaneandpuffy: Are you on antibiotics?
The reason that root canals have such bad reputations is because, back in the day, the patient wasn't given antibiotics to treat any infection in the tooth. The infection would make the tooth very sensitive and would cause the numbing medications to wear of very quickly, and therefore cause some pain.
I had one done about 10 years ago. It was painless but it seemed to take forever. The doctor gave me some Xanax to make me relax before going in. ood luck tomorrow!

@BabyBoecksMom: no, the problem is under a crown so they can't really see if there is an infection or what under there. Didn't say anything about antibiotics... Just told me today I needed this and they gave me an appointment for tomorrow! Great, now I have to worry about antibiotics and bfing!!!

I also had to have Xanax before a root canal. I have genetically poor teeth. Its awful. They are as white as can be, but cavitives galore. I finally found a fabulously conservative dentist that isn't agressive with drilling. Anyhow... root canals are bearable. I find the drilling in the tooth to be the worst thing. But you don't really feel any pain. I do have a horror story of a root canal gone wrong the ultimately resulted in an apicoectomy (OMG, don't google it). So my only suggestion is to have the root canal done by an endodontist or a super dentist that you trust is skillful.

You won't die! I had to get a root canal done after they had placed the permanent crown on the tooth. I was super nervous, but the worst part about the procedure is how long you have to keep your mouth open. I didn't have to take any antibiotics, and had absolutely no issues afterwards. Just popped some Tylenol and ibuprofen and I was good to go. And the best part, no more tooth aches afterwards! Good luck, I'm sure it'll go smoothly!

I paid extra for n.oxide in addition to the novocainr and it was well worth it. I was uncomfortable box it was w far back molar but otherwise pain free and loopy.

I had a root canal almost a decade ago and was surprised it didn't hurt at all, but that was because the reason I was going in for one was because I had just gotten a brand new filling on that tooth, and perhaps the dentist drilled too deeply to the nerves but it hurt like hell.......so root canal was completely painless, but I was scared too! Good luck!!!!!! I feel for ya! I hate having tooth issues! I literally have nightmares about teeth!

@sloaneandpuffy: I had one done earlier this year because I was 7 wks at the time. I had to go to an endodentist. Honestly, if I knew how great I was going to feel afterwards, I'd have done it ASAP. It wasn't bad and I felt soooooo much better after it was all done! Good luck!!!

@sloaneandpuffy: their reputation is much worse than the reality. I had one about a year ago and it was painless. It just takes forever. Good luck tomorrow!
