I'm curious to know if the urine tests that are done at each prenatal visit would pick up on a UTI? I'm curious about this as I have a lot more bladder pressure now. I've never had a UTI and I understand during pregnancy you can have them and have no symptoms so thats why I was wondering

I had to take a urine test each appointment. The first one I had a UTI, and the test did find it. So short answer, yes.

@auggiefrog: oh okThanks thats reassuring. Yeah I pee in a cup each time I go. I know they check for protein in the urine and i think sugar but didnt know if thats connected to UTIs in anyway. I just had an appointment last week and had my routine pee in a cup test so I assume all is well. I will have another appointment next week and will specifically mention the bladder pressure this time

@Mrsbells: if they suspect uti they would probably have you do a clean catch sample and then do a culture of it, instead of just the urinalysis. Definitely mention it!

@Mrsbells: in short, no. Most clinics check for UTI first appointment only and then a follow up if you did have a UTI. The other routine urine test (that not all clinics do now BTW - my practice has stopped going this) just looks for protein and glucose. So you should definitely items mention if you have symptoms so the proper test can be done.

Ah Ok. Thanks you guys that's what i initially suspected. I don't really have a specific symptom other than feeling pressue but i will mention it at my next appointment in a few days. I will also call in tomorrow about it

You can also buy UTI test strips at a pharmacy/grocery store. You pee in a cup, dunk the strip, and compare colors. This might give you some piece of.mind ..... or motivation to call the doctor

@meadow: yeah I had thought about that too. wasnt sure how accurate those tests strips are but will consider it since I'm going to the pharmacy today anyway

I apparently have chronic asymptomatic UTIs during pregnancy - since they caught a UTI twice (once at intake and once at an ultrasound), they just wrote on my chart to do a clean catch every visit instead of the typical urine test.

If you think you might have a you they'll likely ask for a clean-catch in addition to the regular pee-test.

Thanks everyone. I went by the pharmacy and got the strips but will mention it next time. I dont have an real UTI symptoms other than feeling a lot of pressure on bladder sometimes which could just be the baby sitting on my bladder... I will pee on the strips I bought just to clear my mind a bit

@Mrsbells: my OB's office did a strip that included UTI and sent it to the lab for confirmation or if I reported symptoms. My 2nd pregnancy I had many symptoms esp pressure and then one pretty much symptom free UTI, go figure!

@2littlepumpkins: i'm actually not sure what my office does. I did the home test today results didn't tell me much but by the time i called the office they were closed. So i am calling first thing tomorrow and going to get it done.
