My 5 month old son has been in the pediatric ICU since Tuesday night with a nasty case of RSV. He's on oxygen, IV fluids and getting breathing treatments/therapy every 2 hours. The doctors are hopeful we can get him home Monday or Tuesday but say nothing is certain with RSV. Any moms ever deal with severe RSV? How long did it take your LO to recover? Any long-term impact (asthma, etc.)? I could use some reassurance that someone else has been here and made it through...

Oh boy do I have RSV experience. All winter it's pretty much all I do. We tell parents that the disease typically peaks on day 5-7 and slowly gets better from there. Babies look better or worse minute to minute depending g where the mucus plugging and inflammation is in the small airways. I encourage parents to get the flu shot as soon as the baby is 6 months because babies who get RSV and flu are more likely to wheeze going into the future.
It doesn't sound like your little one is intubated, which is good news. As for breathing treatments, the pediatric literature is full of study after study that says they don't contribute to recovery in RSV... But so often people feel like they have to do something. Treatment for RSV is supportive with oxygen, suction and feeding support.
It is a very hard disease for parents to deal with because there is not a whole lot you can do except ride it out... But it is common and you little one should get better soon.

My LO had RSV in December and it sucked! He didn't need to go to the hospital but it still it was hard because there was hardly anything we could do to affectively make him feel better. He had a hard time eating his solids because he couldn't breathe through his nose. Hang in there mama! He will feel better soon!

@Mrs. Jacks: Thank you so much for your response. They thought they might have to intubate on Thursday but we were able to avoid it at the last minute, thank God. Fingers crossed that was our peak day. He is still fighting a fever at night (102-103) even with two days of iv antibiotics (had a double ear infection and couldn't keep oral meds down) and the docs don't seem to have much explanation for that. They said that's not normally an RSV thing? I just want my little guy home:(

@SeptMomma12: rsv can indeed cause fever, but what often happens is they come into the hospital with rsv and leave with another virus! I'm glad they treated empirically for bacteria!
