My toddler is getting over a cold. She has a cough only at night and her nose is still runny. We are supposed to go to a birthday party this afternoon and I'm not sure if it's okay to take her or if we should apologize and stay home. What would you do???

Yes, it's just a runny nose. My kids have a perpetual runny nose all winter. I follow daycare sick rules for birthday parties.

@regberadaisy: what are daycare rules? It's a small, casual party, I think... Mostly SAHMs and toddlers. They don't know very many people.

I would, and always do, skip if my LO has a runny nose or other symptoms due to illness. It stinks, but I feel that it's common courtesy to not knowingly share illnesses.
ETA: The other reason to skip of course is your LO's health. Her immune system is already taxed, what if another child there has something and gives it to her? It's just not worth it, in my opinion.

I probably would go, unless D was exceptionally snotty and gross. Daycare rules are no fever, vomiting, or diarrhea within 24 hours (at least those are ours). Like @regberadaisy: said, my son has a slightly runny nose and mild cough off and on pretty much all winter long. If I kept him from activities for a runny nose, we'd never go anywhere!

Kids go to daycare with a runny nose and cough all the time. If I didn't send my child because of that she would never go during the winter! I might not go to a party if she had a bad cough. But a runny nose I would have no problems going and I know the parents I know are the same way. But we're all daycare peeps that are constantly exposed to germs.... -

DD is pretty clingy, so I think we can safely go without it being an issue. Also, you're right, if I keep her home for every sniffle we will never get out! If she were actively coughing during the day I wouldn't risk it, but I think the night cough is mostly dry-air irritation.

I'd call the mom and ask her opinion. Some parents won't mind, but some might, so better to check first.

If it's just a runny nose, I'd take her. Kids constantly have runny noses and boogers it seems.If she has a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, then I'd stay home.

I'd say yes... Agree with following daycare rules. I feel some kid is always dripping somewhere anyway!

I'd just ask the hosts. I'd explain that it's a runny nose and we are well past being contagious, but I wanted to give a heads up. It's not just her kid, it's all the kids at the party.

I too usually follow day care rules for bday parties, BUT that's because most of our parties are with day care friends so they kids are around each other all day every day anyway. SAHMs might be a little more put off by you bringing a slightly sick kid to their house than a day care mom would be. Just something to consider.

@regberadaisy: @truth bombs: I agree, and hadn't thought about it till now, I think daycare parents are more laid back about illness! I stay at home with my son and even when working I had a nanny. So for us a cold was a big deal! He didn't get his first one till he was 1 year old! But my sisters kids (daycare and school aged) are always sick and she thinks I'm a lunatic for worrying about germs.
I'm getting better! He's taking regular classes now and since then he's been sick with a cold 2 times and a stomach bug once. So I get it, it's not the end of the world. Just sucks -
I wouldn't even think twice about it. Both my kids have had a cough at night and runny nose since mid-September, as does every other kid in their class at school. Unless it's an active illness or a fever, I'd go.

Clear snot, I would bring to the party. Green/yellow/etc., I would stay at home.

@mrsrain: I agree, I typically subscribe to daycare rules. My LO has been congested for a while and she would t go anywhere if we avoided other kids because of a runny nose

Thanks for all of your input! We did end up going and I'm glad we did. It was a very small party-- just 5 kids in total. The runny nose was not an issue at all while we were there.
