For those who are SAHMs who used to work outside the home, do you accomplish more or less then you expected you would now that you are a SAHM? I have big dreams of being a stay at home mom and doing a lot of stuff like keep the house perfectly clean, all homemade food , a big garden in the summer to can all of our own food... I already do a lot of this stuff and work outside the home full-time, but I'm wondering if I'm underestimating how much harder things will be when I have kids?

When she was a newborn I got absolutely nothing done. I focused on necessities, like laundry. Now that she's 4 1/2 months old I'm starting to be able to do a lot more. I just put her in her carrier, which she hated when she was younger. And I think as she gets older it will continue to get easier.
But really I think it depends on your LO. My baby wouldn't let me put her down during the day when she was a newborn, so my time was spent holding her during her naps when I feel like a lot of mothers can do other things (like sleep!). And now she's such a light sleeper that I still don't do anything during nap time for fear of waking her up.
I don't do all homecooked meals, and if I do cook a meal it will be something very easy, like in the crock pot. And I'm very happy to say that I just got back into doing some baking again. Plus, I have a cleaning lady (thanks to my grandma!) so I don't have to worry about doing much cleaning.

I won't be a SAHM until May when Sneakers gets here, but I've been much less productive as a SAHW than I thought I would be. I love to cook, so I do cook so much more now that I have the time. I think that when I was working the pressure of not having very much time at home made me more productive there.

I think I'm actually less productive than I used to be when I was working full time. Before my LO was born I kept the house clean, hosted parties, cooked all the time, volunteered..
Now that my LO's here and I'm a SAHM I still clean and cook and host parties, but I'm not as "good" as I used to be. I find that I have to really push myself to get chores done and I'm not as motivated to keep the house clean and cook yummy meals.

For me it depends on the day and the LO's mood, some days I'm more productive than others. I have found that overall I don't get as much done as I thought I would.

Oh man, I accomplish a lot less! Its hard to get motivated!!!! But I am nesting right now, so I have been doing crazy things, like bleaching the inside of the fridge

I have a little list that I'm trying out. Certain days of the week I do certain things. I already am the cook of the family so that won't change and I take care of the yard in the summer (we don't have much). We don't really get a lot done right now other than laundry, dishes, naps and walks though. Things should change as he gets older.

I am far more productive as a sahm. I have a live in nanny which I know gives me more luxury time than other sahms so I thought it should be mentioned. When I was a resident before I had my son I was working around 80 hours a week (capped so they make sure you do 80) and sometimes it was 24 straight hours in a shift. I barely had time to eat. As a funny story, when I met my husband I had a shaved head. I was working with cancer patients, mainly children and had no time to do anything with my thick, long, wavy hair. I felt guilt for the kids that lost their hair and was tired of putting it up in a very messy bun every day so I had it shaved off. I looked so edgy haha!
My husband didn't even get to see my long hair until we were engaged -
The first few months, I was lucky if I managed to feed myself and take a shower, lol. My LO would not sleep unless she was held and she was too young to be sleep-trained. Things got a tiny bit better after the 4th month but it wasn't 'til she was 8 months that I was able to actually get some stuff done while she was awake. That was also when she was stronger and started to be able to entertain herself and didn't need me hovering around to make sure she didn't injure herself.
Now, LO is 1 year old and I finally have a system down where I can be super-productive during her naps and still get some stuff done while she's awake but it's still no where near as productive as I was prior to her arrival. I don't mind though cause I'd rather play with her when she's awake. They grow up so fast.
