SAHMs - When do you go to the gym?

So I have two Littles. 3 years old and 1 and a half. We HAVE to do an activity for them in the morning or else they don't nap. And i NEED them to nap so I can work from home.

We're really lucky that there's a county run program available to us that has 8 free classes for the 3 year old every month and 5 classes for the 1 year old. Those are all scheduled before the first of the month. Each week on Sunday I go in and fill in the days without class with other activities (library, park playdate, etc. This morning we're going to do crafts with a friend at a park).

THEN I go through and fill in when I'm going to the gym. If I have time to make it to a class at the gym before they have their activities that's ideal. Otherwise I fill it in as I can.

It works for us. I make it to the gym usually 5 times a week. (They go to daycare at the gym)

I go on the weekends and on holidays that DH has off of work. While I'm at the gym on the weekends DH will watch DS for the hour or so it takes. He usually takes him to the library or to the park to play. During the week I usually just do a light workout during DS's naps.

You should check the gym's schedule because at least at my gym childcare isn't available all day.

LO wakes up at 7:30 and naps at 11:30, so I prefer to do things in the morning that are close by (so he doesn't fall asleep in the car), and that don't require a shower (to save time). The gym is perfect! I definitely consider it our morning activity (he enjoys playing with the toys and other kids).

I only go twice a week, but I run and/or go to Stroller Strides one other morning most weeks. I like to mix it up for both of us.

@daniellemybelle: this is a little late but I do a stroller workout class three times a week and it's great! The program in my area only meets at certain times so I'm not sure if it would work with your schedule but the class incorporates having your LO with you while you work out and it is a really good work out! Not sure if they have it in your area or not. Wall me if you want the name of the program but you should be able to just google stroller workout class! Good luck! Working out while working full time and having a LO has always been a struggle for me!

Thanks everyone! I tried to write out responses to all of you but it was getting crazy long.

I think realistically if I want to do some of the activities I'm interested in that are around 10 / 10:30, we are just not going to make it to the gym that day unless we rush to get out the door really early OR we really push nap time. So, I think a couple days per week we'll do an activity at 9am & go to the gym after, and then the other days we'll alternate going to the gym and an activity. So for example Monday & Wednesday will be activity + gym days, Tuesday I'll just go the gym, Thursday we'll do an activity, Friday I'll go to the gym. And the next week, Monday & Wednesday stay the same, and we'll do an activity on Tuesday & Friday and go to the gym on Thursday. Except for one gymnastics class, everything else is free or drop-in so there's no issue with going every other week.

I feel good about this plan because I'll still get to the gym 3-4 times per week, we'll have a set routine for at least two days of the week, and we can have some flexibility the other days. I'm sure some days we'll just stay home or run an errand - my personality is that I need to kind of set the bar high, knowing I will probably not reach it, but it gives me motivation

Something I thought about... depending how she naps, afternoon might be more hit/miss. I know E can sometimes be up and ready to go by 1:15 or she can sleep til after 3. I personally would rather do the workout in the AM so I could shower during her nap (UNLESS the gym had nice showers!!!) Maybe prioritize which you'd rather do (enriching stuff or gym) and do that in the AM, as that'll be more regular, and then do the other stuff in the afternoon. You might also want to see when activities through local mom groups or friends you make are. I know when we did Gymboree, granted that was the weekend, but it was typically AM. It will probably also be cooler in the AM. So yeah I probably just changed my mind mid-reply. I would schedule the AM and then make the gym more flexible post nap, and shower there- but keep plans flexible as you get to know your new city!

I found a barre studio with classes at 815pm, so I go after my husband gets home. On the weekends, I try to get away for one 830am class, and my husband gets some one-on-one time to hang out with my son.

The biggest game changer for me, though, was buying my own treadmill. I either use it in the morning before my husband goes to work or during my kid's nap. I try to do at least 30 min everyday, and I love being able to watch netflix while I workout!

Never! I should work out, but I don't. I do go for walks throughout the day, which is better then nothing.

@kjpugs: Haha I you girl, but I don't even know what you mean! Naps are definitely hit or miss for us as well and as much as I don't want to accept it, over the next year we may start to have some no nap days So I definitely want to make our mornings our "busy" time and then the afternoon can be more chill. Run errands or just hang out in the house. It is going to be hottest in the afternoon anyway. I going to sign her up for The Little Gym (bye bye money) and her class will be at 9:15am so that will work out nicely. I've joined a couple local FB mommy groups and all their playdates are mid-morning and they have lunch together.

@mole: Seriously, I would love my own treadmill. I think if I commit to this I could see it being worth it to spring for one but I am not even sure where we would put it.

@Keybee: Totally. Right now I am 100% sedentary so I don't judge and I think it's great that you walk! I need a change.

@daniellemybelle: YEAH I also decided to read the page 2 replies after I posted mine hahahaha. I like your plan! And then afternoons can be for playdates, errands, and that sort of thing!

@daniellemybelle: You should look up OrangeTheory fitness if they have it in your new city. They don't have childcare, but they do have early/evening classes and you get your first 1-2 classes free. It's an hour, and I love it. I told T we were making room in the budget for it.

I'm the type that hates going to the gym, and I love this class. Strength and cardio rolled into one, plus the trainers are super friendly.
