@MaryM: you can always say you would like a competitive salary.

This depends, already having a salary, I would use that to add or decrease based on the position applying for.

Also if you think there is room in their budget shoot high. If they like you they will be willing to negotiate. Last year I was aiming for a 5K raise, I asked for 10K instead (assuming they would counter), and I ended up with the full 10K :).

@MaryM: if it's a promotion, I would guess you would base it on what you make now, no? Do some research to find out what that job makes in the area (glassdoor is good) and then bump it some because they know you. You're staying within the same company and they know you are a reliable employee.

I typically give out 20-30k more than I'm at now and mention its negotiable for the right position. I have usually ended up being offered no less than 15k over what I make, which is what I would be satisfied with in the first place. It leaves room for negotiation. I do work for an organization currently that will not give someone more than 10k over what they currently make. I got around it because I could provide a history of consistent bonuses above my annual salary. Always aim high! If they're really interested in you, they will still talk to you even if the salary is more than they can offer because they'll at least want to see if you have any room to come down. At least that's been my experience.
