San Bernardino

I know we have bees there. I pray that you and your loved ones are all safe.

ETA: I really hope this doesn't become a controversial/debate thread. I really just want it to be supportive of the folks that are in the middle of this tragedy now.

I hope that our first response isn't to point our fingers at others, but that our first response can be to mourn with and care for those who are suffering.

Does anyone know why they would target this building? It doesn't seem like a controversial place/building.

@ms.line: Me too. I'm reading up to TWENTY people possibly shot? When do we say enough is enough? I'm hoping that turns out to be wrong, it's always so hard to tell what's really going on in the initial minutes and even hours. But regardless. Ugh.

@.twist.: as far as I can tell, it's an organization that helps people with developmental disorders -- I can't imagine what's controversial about that either. Although after a gunman targeted a bunch of kindergarteners and first-graders, nothing really surprises me anymore

These mass shootings are happening so frequently these days. It's scary that that many people are resorting to this kind of violence.

@MaryM: Any more info? I haven't heard what has happened there.

  6. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@Boogs: they believe 3 to be dead. 20 possible injuries. the suspects have escaped (?) and are being looked for.

  7. MaryM

    pomelo / 5129 posts

@Boogs: Details are still coming out so it's hard to tell, but they suspect multiple shooters (and at least one may still be on the loose) and up to 20 injured, several killed. Centered on a center for people with developmental disabilities.

    So sad

DD goes to a daycare that's within a disability center for children too. I can't, for the life of me, understand why there

These poor people. I can't even fathom why a place like this was targeted. This makes me so scared.

I think I saw something that said we have had more mass shootings in 2015 than days of the year. I think everyone can agree that something's got to give.

The shooting occurred in a conference room at the facility, and the conference room was rented to an outside group (which has not yet been identified).

This is not the world I want my daughter to grow up in! I remember being a kid when Columbine happened- I can still recall being home and watching about it on TV. There are so many shootings happening now that none stick out in my memory anymore. It's so sad.

Looks like it was the county public health department's holiday party.

I think it's so surreal that we are waiting to hear what kind of people did this so people can either blame terrorism, or if it was a white guy say "oh, we should do something about mental illness, not guns!" and then not do anything about mental illness either. I'm so effing sick of this. I don't want to raise my kids in a country like this.

I was thinking earlier about how wrong it is that I wasn't even stunned when I saw the headline, just disgusted and sad. It is becoming the norm in the U.S. And that is scary.

  19. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@jedeve: Right? I hate when people say, "it's about mental illness not guns!" Umm, it can actually be about at least two things at the same time. Possibly even more.

  20. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

I just saw 14 dead and 14 injured. And with possibly 3 suspects working together, I don't tend to think mental illness right away.

  21. 2littlepumpkins

    So sad.

As far as the guns go, it doesn't sound like they are thinking anything even close to legal here was used in this.

  22. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@2littlepumpkins: I haven't heard anything about the weapons in this particular incident yet. Regardless, the majority of mass shooters' guns are purchased legally, or because sellers fail to do their due diligence required by law: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/10/03/us/how-mass-shooters-got-their-guns.html?_r=0

  23. travellingbee

    hostess / papaya / 10219 posts

@2littlepumpkins: all they said was they were "long guns". I can't see how they could know if they were legal or not.

The building was the Inland Regional Center, which is where you go to get Early Intervention services such as Speech, OT, or PT for babies aged 0-3. And they probably offer other services as well. I used to do early intervention PT and have worked with other Regional Centers around LA, but not that one. So sad and scary.

    @jedeve: ditto.

  26. 2littlepumpkins

    grapefruit / 4455 posts

@travellingbee: When I said it "sounded like" I didn't mean I know for sure, what I meant was CNN sounded like. I personally am skeptical, but the reporter mentioned 700 rounds per minute..which would only be legal if they were owned from pre 1980something, according to dh. Definitely not legal to buy now. Just thought it was worth the mention... eta, they're also saying it's a yukon, when the person who said it was like a yukon corrected themselves..so I think any info right now isn't that reliable.

Long rifle and assault rifle are the terms being used by the local media. There is live news footage showing one of the suspects dead on the ground with his assault rifle next to him.

2 down, hopefully one to go.

  31. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@Crystal: There is the dead suspect on the street. The dead suspect in the back seat that just slid out of the car. (!!) I don't know where the third one is.

ETA: In case anyone wants to watch whats going on: http://abc7.com/live/

ETA: The gun that is lying next to the dead suspect in the street definitely does not look like a legal gun.
