I actually learned about this from the Showtime show The Affair. Super scary. D fell in my BIL's pool over Memorial Day weekend and I was hyper-vigilant looking out for signs of this.

Yeah, scary stuff. I heard about this a few years ago and it's always in the back of my mind, especially because the kids pretty much live on the beach all summer.

@Running Elley: This is on the news a lot each summer and honestly it just makes me a bit paranoid everytime LO potentially swallows some water

I did some reading on secondary drowning when we first started letting DD crawl around in pools, and the thing I keep going back to is the quote from a physician saying something like "I cannot emphasize enough how rare this is." It is awful that it happens, but I do feel it causes far more fear than is needed (and yes, there are blog posts/articles every summer because they generate a ton of clicks!)

@PawPrints: I was told the same by an ER doc at work. I asked about secondary drowning and he said it gets a lot of publicity but it's uncommon. He also said he prefers to stress ways to prevent traditional drowning, because that is unfortunately very common, especially in the summer.
