dh is making grilled cheese for the first time ever & it brought up this debate. When making grilled cheese do you butter one side or both sides of the bread. I will leave it anonymous as to who says what but I want your oponion.

I butter both sides. I definitely don't think it's necessary though lol.

You mean one side of each piece of bread, right? so both sides of the sandwich, but one side of the bread. That's what I do. I find it annoying enough to do that, I don't want to butter the inside too.

I butter the outsides to grill. Just cheese (or tuna!) on the inside.

I don't butter either side. I melt some butter on the griddle and place the bread on the melted butter. Makes the bread crispy and not soggy.

@KT326: I've done that once but I find that it doesn't make the entire slice buttery and crispy. It's a little splotchy for my taste.
@sorrycharlie: Oh, I use spreadable butter or margarine when I make grilled cheese. If I didn't have spreadable butter, I guess I would resort to putting the butter in the pan first. Or, I think I put the stick of butter in the microwave so it softens it a little.

I melt butter in the pan and the butter the top piece of bread since the bottom soaks up all the butter while toasting.

@KT326: whoa never thought of doing that! lol @sorrycharlie: I leave my butter on the counter so it's nice and spreadable.
I butter the outsides only. What's also yummy is if you sprinkle some parmesan cheese on the outside bread. yum

@sorrycharlie: I toast the bread just a little bit first so it's crispy & warm, then butter so the stick butter melts and spreads!
