I heard on the radio that the gunman is dead, but they don't know if it is a self-inflicted wound or not.

For goodness sake. Isn't it really time we talked about the relationship with guns in this country? This is ridiculous! I'm so sorry for the injured.

@Mrs. Jacks: Agreed.
I was reading eyewitness accounts on Reddit while I pumped at work. So scary.
Several news sources are reporting that the shooter was a disgruntled employee who had just been fired and that he killed a co-worker before opening fire on innocent bystanders.
I'm following the HuffPo live blog about the shooting: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/24/empire-state-building-sho_n_1827534.html?1345815551&ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009

According to CNN police have now confirmed that they shot the attacker.

@Mrs. Jacks: Guns do make it easier, but a disgruntled employee could just as easily stab someone to death and go on a stabbing rampage through the office if he wanted to. I think some people are just sick and don't have the resources to get help (and/or the company he worked for might have been really oppressive and horrible and fired him in a bad way). I'm not sure.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@highwire: I highly doubt there would be so many injured or killed with a knife. And it gives people a chance to overpower the guy if he doesn't have such a lethal weapon. I just think we need to be talking about it because it's getting bad.

@highwire: @Mrs. Jacks:
From the NYPost:
Eeerily, just minutes before the mayhem, Mayor Bloomberg was warning about the dangers of “too many guns on the streets” on his weekly radio show.
“The argument guns don’t kill people, people kill people is one of the most disingenuous things you can say,” he said shortly before 9 a.m. while discussing tougher guns laws being proposed in Albany.
“It does take a person to pull the trigger, but if they didn’t have the gun... We are the only developed country in the world with this problem.”

@Mrs. Jacks: I think it is a loaded subject which we probably have differing views on. The knife was just one example (could have been a bomb or chemicals or other things). But perhaps the ease of the gun and the ability to shoot from a distance is an issue that needs reform, like you said.

@Mrs. Jacks: @highwire: I agree with Mrs. Jacks-- if you go on a stabbing rampage, it's a lot easier to run away from a knife than a bullet. I sure as hell don't know what the answer is, but this is insanity.
I used to work 2 blocks away from there and would walk by that corner every day on my way from the subway, and my sister still lives 6 blocks away. I almost feel bad saying this, but I'm glad the police shot and killed the gunman. No insanity pleas and no drawn out trial for victims to sit through.

@highwire: loaded subject (tee hee, morbid pun!). At least bombs and chemicals are regulated. Anyway, I appreciate there are differing viewpoints, but right now the discussion is so driven by one side that it's almost heretical to suggest that we should regulate guns differently. I think it's time to put all kinds of creative solutions on the table because the loss of like is unconscionable.

I was reading about that, the next article was titled '13 shot in 30 minutes in Chicago'. I'm not sure how anyone could say gun control in the US is acceptable right now. I was never a big Jason Alexander fan, but after the CO movie theater attack, he wrote something that made me love him. I wish I could be as well spoken.

I live right near here, so this has been so disturbing. I was frantically called my MIL to make sure she and my LO were safe.

@Mrs. Jacks: i totally agree. why can't we required those who want to own a firearm take annual mental competency exams!

Anxiously waiting to hear from my Mom and Grandfather who are in NYC for a little touristy vacation.
Of all places they could be, chances are hopefully slim they were not in the area, but still eager to hear from them to ensure they are ok!

I gotta say, I'm with @highwire. I was raised in a NRA family and with lots of guns in the house. My husband has guns as well. That doesn't mean I'm going to go out and kill people because I have access to them. I think we need to be more cautious on who is getting them, and I don't think you should be able to walk into a store and elave with a gun. Maybe some mental health checks should be in place. People do kill other people without guns as well. Having a gun makes me feel like I could protect myself if needed.

I was on the very block literally 3-4 minutes before this happened. I am so grateful that I'm still able to walk at my normal, New Yorker quick pace at 31 weeks or it would have happened right before my eyes.

Im from Canada, of course with very different gun laws than in the US and shootings still happen! While I think who can have a gun could be drastically scaled back in the US, even that won`t fix everything!
Stupid people are still going to get their hands on them, and make very bad, very tragic decisions in all the wrong places and do what they please.
This is such a tragic event, you always hope when you hear of mass shootings no matter where they are you never hear about them ever again, unfortunately we will, hope everyone who was hurt in this incident recovers and will be ok.

This makes me nauseous. I don't even want to voice my opinion on the subject because...well I don't have a good reason, but I just can't even think about it right now.

@Tidybee: oh gosh! Glad you are okay!
We used to live on the same block as ESB and frequented that neighborhood from time to time... so scary and tragic

@Beebug: The frequency of mass and random shootings is much higher in america than other countries that have stricter gun laws. I lived in england for many years and even the police dont carry guns there. Needless to say the occurence of shootings of any kind is very rare there.

This is horrific. It seems like now they think the 9 people who were injured may have been shot by police after they opened fire on the gunman.

@Modern Daisy: It's so scary isn't it! They're supposed to protect us

@JennyLayneAZ: I know, well they were caught in the cross fire apparently which is so horrible. When the police confronted the gunman he started shooting at them, so the police shot back and killed him.

@Mrsbells: I live in Canada and I agree with what you said completely. Shootings can happen anywhere, but its the accessibility of guns and frequency that's concerning.

@Modern Daisy: I know, I read that too. You just don't think you're going to be caught in crossfire while walking and minding your own business. So sad.

@alison206: I agree with you and Highwire. All the adults in my family have concealed permits. None of us are crazy, and they there for emergencies. My dad has a gun with him at all times because he has a stalker that has come behind him with a knife before. We all need to protect ourselves.

@Mrsbells: Police men do not have guns in England? How dangerous! What would they do if someone was waving a gun at them? Karate chop them?

I'm not sure what the answer is, but it's pretty clear that the current system isn't working.

@anonysquire: not sure if you're serious, but British police do have weapons.

@Rachel: Long story but this man's mom sold my dad her son's property after her son thought he would get it free for the rest of his life or something. So the guy is angry at my dad for buying his property. My dad always has windows broken in, paintballs covering his building and other immature crap.
