I've been seeing an MFM all along because among other things, LO has been at risk of IUGR. So now I'm a day short of 34w and he's at the 11th percentile with an abdominal circumference under the 5th percentile. I know it could be worse, but what is the significance of the abdominal circumference being lower?
I guess I assumed it would all be fine by now.

DS was an IUGR baby and the lower percentile concern is that the organs (e.g. kidney, stomach, liver, lungs) aren't developing and/or functioning properly on schedule. Meaning, upon birth, they will still be under developed and not functioning fully on their own and require medical assistance. Depending on what the ultrasounds pick up, you may get induced early.

@spaniellove: sorry to hear you are dealing with this. DS was diagnosed as IUGR when I was pregnant. I think his abdominal circumference percentage was similar to head and legs but I remember reading that often with iugr the brain takes all the nutrients because it's most important so it is common for abdominal circumference to be smaller. The internal organs may need some extra time to mature after the baby is born. I think some common issues are blood sugar and needing help breathing at the very beginning. DS was measuring under 5th percentile before I was induced at 39 weeks and had no issues whatsoever. It is definitely a scary diagnosis but doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.

So sorry you are going through this. Are you getting NSTs or BPPs? In my practice, the cutoff for IUGR diagnosis is 10%, but if I was at 11%, then I would insist upon NSTs, BPPs, and the umbilical doppler thingys. That being said, the abdomen isn't measuring that much smaller than overall so maybe just a small baby. Thinking of you.

@raintreebee: Yes, they finally got serious and decided to do NST/AFI/dopplers for the next few weeks. I really did hope I wouldn't have to deal with this at the end.

@spaniellove: I really wish you didn't have to deal with this too. Fwiw, my baby was slightly growth restricted. He came out 9th percentile but within 8 weeks had soared to 49th

@raintreebee: That's encouraging to hear about your LO! Especially after what you went through with him dropping in weight right after he was born.
