I'm having trouble deciding between an all out kids rug (roads, cars, numbers, alphabet etc.,) and a fun rug that will also work down the road as a non kids rug....
What do you have?

When he's older we will get a cute fun rug, but not train/car/etc.

We got a cute cheap (like $20) kids rug with numbers for now. No hurt throwing it out once the juice stains are there and she's a bit older we will get something else.

We don't really have a playroom, but we do have a play nook. We chose a simple rug over something kid-themed.

We just bought a new house and the playroom has hardwood floors so we are going to do a foam may like @littlek: . Rugs are so expensive and I hate to spend money on something "kid themed" that won't have a lot of life.

@Arden: thanks! It's still a work in process. That's actually an old picture. We've changed it some since then.

@teamjse has amazing playroom... I think she used a neutral rug, that's beautiful!

We have this one from Target (in gray) in C's room. I love it. http://www.target.com/p/room-365-kensington-rug/-/A-14880366#prodSlot=medium_1_36&term=herringbone

@loveisstrange: I love that rug! Any chance you would be able to share a real life picture of it? Has it held up well? Is it soft enough for scooting around on?

We dont have a playroom, but i prefer neutral or geometric patterns for rugs....they are expensive and i wouldn't want to have to replace it if i decided to change up the decor. I also hate "little kid" style stuff. I do have a rug that was given to us that has roads on it for toy cars. I have it folded up and will take it out for lo to play on and then put it away. It is more of a toy than decoration.
In los room (which is essentially our playroom) we have a charcoal gray shag rug. It is comfy to sit on and goes with the room the room. Im pretty sure we got it at target.

This is a picture of it from IKEA, but this is the button rug we have.

We also have a foam, interlocking mat. It's cheap, cushy, and keeps the cold away from our hardwood floors during winter. It was one of our better purchases!

We got the mat because playroom is in basement and Berber carpet does not have much pading. It's also nice because of there is a mess, it's easy to clean up.

@Cole: Sure thing. Excuse the room, we're in the process of decorating it! The rug is very soft. It almost feels like microfiber. The super short weave is easy to clean. Id recommend it.

We have a playroom/DH office and we have a foam mat like @littlek:

@teamjse: that is a GORGEOUS play room! Wow.
@rahlyrah: That teepee is adorable!

We don't have a specific play room, but use a fun Skip Hop foam may in LO's play area.
@teamjse: not to thread jack but where did you find that great table? It's exactly like what I am looking for.

@loveisstrange: Thank you! Your nursery is adorable! I think that rug is officially a top contender now.

@teamjse: That play room is magazine ad material. It's so fun yet orderly. Love it!
@loveisstrange: I spy a very cute baby climbing down the bed! Your nursery is very pretty, love the colors.

@petunia354: Oh I remember this post! Very nice looking rug. Is he enjoying his new playroom?

@petunia354: we have that rug in our tv room!
We have this one from CB2 in our nursery - I think it is playful but not childish. It's also on sale now, ugh.

@petunia354: What is that storage unit called? I can't find it anywhere on their website!

@grizz: Thanks! You should see the other side, though. It's a huge room (used to be a 2 car garage) and my husband's hunting gear and camo have pretty much vomited all over it. Only one half is cute.

@BananaPancakes: hahaha! That's what half our office is, so I understand!

@grizz: it's the expedit bookcase turned on its side!! I think I read that IKEA discontinued the expedit line recently and replaced it with the kallax (sp?) line which is almost identical...
I think this might the closest match - http://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/00275848/
