Is she a gassy baby? Sometimes when M wakes up screaming she needs to be picked up and burped. That's why CIO won't work for us : (

I pretty much did the extinction method, but if DD was hysterical, I would go in ONE time. If I picked her up and she immediately stopped crying, then I'd know she was fine, put her back down, and not go back in. However, sometimes I would pick her up and find that she needed to let out a burp. It might be good to check at least once just to make sure she's ok. If you pick her up and she immediately stops crying, it'll give you a sign that she's fine and at least give you some peace of mind moving forward...

I'd give it 15-20 minutes or so and then go in for a quick check if she was still hysterical, same as Mrs. High Heels.

@PrincessBaby: 13 minutes is sooo good! It feels like forever in the moment, but that's REALLY good!

@PrincessBaby: Forgive me as I forget the answer, but does she have reflux or anything? I have heard that CIO will not work on some children with chronic medical conditions like reflux. This is one of the reasons we haven't done it with DS (has GERD and FPIES). There were some desperate times where we said enough was enough, gave in and attempted CIO briefly and it was obvious it was not going to work for him at all.

It sounds like she is doing great through! Keep up the good work!

@PrincessBaby: Okay, it's time for an intervention. Right now. Babies do not cry for the same reasons adults cry.... she does NOT think you don't love her. She is crying because it's her way of communicating and what she is saying is "mummy, I'm awake, i can't go back to sleep because I don't know how to. It's time to rock me/nurse me/[whatever you've taught her she needs to go to sleep]".

You are teaching her a great skill and giving her a wonderful gift - the gift of going to sleep. If you cave now, ALL that hard work, all those nights of her crying will have been for nothing. Do you want to have to rock your toddler to sleep??

You are doing an amazing job. You're a wonderful mother. Hang in there - I know it's hard but you will get there.

Oh and stop using words like "torture" in your head. You are not torturing your baby by teaching her to self soothe!! Get out of that mindset right now! You have to be centered and calm, you have to be at peace with your decision otherwise she will pick up on how you're feeling and it will make this harder for her, too.

@PrincessBaby: Aw I'm sure she is not! She just has a little personality. That's all I got, I'm out of advice (not that that was actually any haha). Hang in there mama! You will all get there.

Crying can also be a stress reliever, believe me, I know first hand how hard it is to leave your kid when they are crying, it seems counterintuitive. Hang in there!

@PrincessBaby: She does not think you don't love her. It's just her only way of communicating. It will be okay. Hugs.

@PrincessBaby: yea, apparently right around night 5 or 6, it can be one of the worst nights during sleep training. i remember reading it is because it is their last attempt to get things to go back to how they were and protesting this new process. So hopefully that was it for you and going forward it will be easier! H is doing seriously amazing though! I know it is tough around that 4:30/5am period because of the noise, but if that is her only wake up all night that is pretty awesome! I don't think bringing her to bed with you at that time is bad at all- anything to get you both more sleep! once you move into your new house you can put her in her crib all night. I don't think you are creating any bad habits by doing that- I think if she is putting herself to sleep at night and only waking up once, that is pretty fantastic- you should be proud of yourself!

@PrincessBaby: Sometimes, there's small sleep regressions during extinction CIO. H won't remember this and will be glad that you taught her how to soothe herself to sleep at this age. It sucks, but the benefits are monumental for a family and marriage.

Yesterday at 4am, we thought LO was crying because of a lost pacifier (no breathable bumpers). After 45 minutes of crying from a CIO'ed STTN baby, DH checked in on him. He was wet and dirty up the wazoo. After a change and a bottle, he slept from 5am-7:30am when I woke him up to get his day started. We felt like bad parents, but were rewarded with a night of good sleep last night until 6:15am when I noticed he wet the crib and himself. It's just how this parenting thing goes.

ETA: Are you doing a dream feed as part of the CIO? Like feed her at 11pm when you're going to bed, so she feeds on your schedule not by her desires. It helped us a lot with sleep training. We discontinued when we visited my inlaws because I was too damn tired to go down the hall there and feed him. He didn't miss it. Around that time, we switched to formula full time, so by 8 months then.

@MsLipGloss: Thank you! I've been reading solidly for 9 months! lol. BUT I'm totally going to need you and @PrincessBaby: and everyone else who has been through it to talk me off the ledge over and over when I'm actually in the thick of it. It's so much easier to say than do, I'm sure!
