So my DH can work 7am -3pm, or 3pm -11pm. He just texted and asked which shift he should put his "bid" on for Januray through April. Only issue is I'm due February 28th. I'm not worried about before the baby, but once the baby is here he will use one week of vacation to stay home with us and then after my 8 weeks are up he will use his 6 weeks off from his job of paternity leave. Which shift would you want your DH to pick in the early newborn days? Mind you we live 5 minutes from his work....

I don't think it matters; your newborn is going to be awake, eat, sleep for most of 7a-11p. Hopefully between 11-7 you can get a few longer sleep stretches.

Split, so you can have some variety! DH works a mix of 1- midnight, 8pm-8am, 7-5pm and 9-8, etc.

Having a husband who works 2-10:30 PM or 2:30-11 PM I say absolutely go for the 7-3 shift. I needed the most help at night when he wasn't around in the newborn days. I still hate that (once school is in session) I don't see him 5 days a week for dinner and family time because I work opposite hours.

I feel like I'd rather him do the early shift... It just seems sooo long to wait till 11pm and you'd be so exhausted by then!

Morning!!! Babies tend to be fussier in the evening and I totally needed Hubs' help in order for me to go to bed early and get sleep for those MOTN wakings. I would NOT have wanted to handle the fussy cluster-feeding craziness of evenings on my own!

@snowjewelz: well he'd be home when he wasn't working, and helping. I'm thinking if he has to work the evening shift it maybe best because he could sleep in on the mornings if we have a rough night... blah i have no clue !!either way it seems to be a mute point

DH worked 6:30-2:30 and i LOVED having him home nice and early. I was pretty burnt out by 3:00, but then the calvary would arrive

@Beanie132: Hmm that is true... Unless you will always just cover for him in the morning if you guys had a rough night, and then he'll take over at night so you can rest? It really is a toss up!

DH did help with nighttime feedings. He was on 10 PM to 8 am, and he actually switched to offer me some more help at night.

I voted I hate shift schedules. Can you tell my husband works shift? But if I had to pick, I'd rather him work early and be home at night. I always find evening to be harder.

My vote would be 7-3. Nighttime was so hard for me and it was so nice having DH home to help out.

I think you're far more likely to have productive time together at home if he works the early shift, even counting in the possibility of a nap. That said, does your DH function well in the morning?

Morning. Night times are worse especially when you've spend all day home with baby. There is dinner time and bath time to contend with. There's a reason why there's a "witching hour". If your DH works 3-11 he will be in no shape to help you during during the day because that's the opposite of our normal body schedule.

I would have LOVED if dh was with me in the AM. So, I voted afternoon.
imagine: it's 7am, and you haven't slept AT ALL and you're starving. It'd be nice for someone to just make you a cup of coffee or hold the baby so you could shower for the day. That was my wish anyway.

DH worked either 9-5 or 2-10. If I could chose I would rather have him home at night. Babies are gussied at night and they have thteir schedule messed up at first so DD was fast asleep all morning but up until midnight everyday. We took turns so I slept from 9pm-1 am, he slept from 1-7, then I got Nother hour before he went to work. It was lovely.

next issue seems to be if the baby goes to daycare should he try to be home with it most of the day and then get pt coverage till i'm home at 6....decisions decisions!

During the early months, DH was gone from 6 am to 4:15 pm and it worked great. LO and I would sleep until 7:30 or 8. By the time DH got home I was so ready for some help. Recently he's been working long days (not getting home until LO is asleep) and it's been incredibly draining for me.
