I really want to get maternity photos done but DH is so against it. He thinks it's a waste of money that we can afford to spend right now. This might be the only time I'm pregnant, so I want to remember it with beautiful photos. Will I regret it if we don't have them done?

Do it. I did a mini session and regret not getting more. Those photos are worth everything to me.
I think it's quite sad for partners to not support it unless you are seriously scrapped for money. If it means a lot to you, they need to support it simply for that reason. I'd insist.

Can you maybe find a budding photographer that will charge less (or even free) to build their portfolio, or ask a talented friend?

Can you compromise and maybe find an art student trying to build their portfolio or a semi-pro for a cheaper price?

If $$ is an issue can you have a friend take some - you could always look for poses you like and recreate them

I didn't with either of my kids and am pretty neutral about it.. I have "regular" photos of myself during pregnancy to look back on and a professional family shoot when I was just barely showing with LO#2; but no real maternity shoot photos. But, I didn't care too much for them to begin with so I don't have regrets.
In your case, I think if YOU want them, you should go for it!!
Do you have a friend with a decent DSLR that could take some of you for free?
Do you want your husband in the photos with you?

I had them w/ my first, but didn't w/ my 2nd. I only liked about 2 of the pictures. I much preferred the newborn pictures of me and the baby.

If it means a lot to you, I think you should go for it. It really isn't something you can go back and do later. Just try to find the most affordable option available to you. (I'm saying this as someone who does not care for maternity photos.)

@mauxie: I have a really nice DSLR so maybe we can do a test shoot with just me and see how they come out. DH is pretty good with the camera.

@MrsHansen82: Maybe ask a friend just to take regular photos if you don't have one with a pro camera. Regular cameras are pretty good these days unless you plan on blowing them up to an enormous size. Just a thought if someone with a DSLR camera isn't available.

I think you should go for it!
I didn't have them done, and I personally don't regret it. I see my friends that have had it done and they are nice but I know for me I wouldn't cherish them. I don't really like pictures of myself. For example we only look at maybe 20 pictures from our wedding. It was a good memory but now I would just rather look at pictures of LO.

I didn't get any and I don't regret not at all. Even since this might be our only. Saving money for pictures of her was more important to me. If it is important to you, then do it.

@MrsHansen82: Ahh gotcha... I think it's worth it esp if you might be one and done! I mean, I kinda get it that the guy's naturally not as excited about it or doesn't understand... Can you show him some pics online? And keep drilling into him that you might only be pregnant this one time?

You should definitely have them done! You know yourself and from what you have said I also think you will cherish them a lot.
Sorry your DH doesn't understand yet! I would definitely talk to him again about it and make sure he understands where you are coming from.

@MrsHansen82: I just wanted to let you know you have inspired me to finally set up some nice photo session for our family. I'm now trying to contact photogs for when DH's parents visit so we can get all the grandparents in on it.
Thank you!It will be a nice memory for LO (and everyone else) before LO #2 ruins his life. Haha.
I should mention that DH is very into nice pictures, but he's lazy so it has always been me to call/set up these things.

If you really want them, I say do it! Even if money is an issue, you can try to find a friend, an student, or an amateur to try and get doe shots. I seriously can't even remember being so big at the end, it's always amazing when I look at the pics to think that LO was inside there.

It sounds like you are someone who values images of the milestone times in your life. I vote yes. Perhaps find a photographer you like and ask them for a full gallery of maternity photos to show your husband?

Yes, I definitely say go for it. I always wanted to get them done, but ended up waiting until my 3rd pregnancy. I'm so glad I got them done...with this being my last pregnancy, I wanted nice photos to remember it.

I was in the same boat and I pushed to get them done (my DH felt the same as yours). I also chose them over newborn photos since DH and I were not a fan of Anne Geddes style newborn photos (and newborn photos were more expensive than maternity).
While I love our maternity pictures and don't regret that I have them, I do regret that I didn't get newborn photos. That newborn phase goes by a lot faster than the pregnancy phase, with less time to take nice photos. So if i could go back in time and choose one or the other, i would choose the newborn photos. If you can afford both, then i would say do both.
ETA. we did do a family shoot at 7.5 months when LO could sit up and smile but was still a baby, so that made up for the lack of newborn photos. with LO#2, i plan to skip maternity and do newborn for sure though.

We skipped pro maternity pics and instead did newborn shots. That would be my choice 100% of the time

My husband is decent with a camera, so he took some photos of me. I haven't done anything with them, honestly, but it's nice to know I have them. I am not the type to display them in my home, but I will put a few in my yearly photo books (eventually).

You can't go back and get photos you never took, but there's always more money to be made. Better to take the pictures, not do anything with them and regret spending the money, than not taking the pictures and wishing you had them.

I say yes - I never felt particularly pretty while I was pregnant and I thought the photos were kind of a waste because it's not like we were going to frame them or anything, but it came in a package with newborn photos so we went for it and I'm SO glad we did. Even just 5 months later, I think I look so lovely and happy in them, and I'm really glad that we have that time documented in such a lovely way!

Money is always tight for us, so I wouldn't pay for a professional shoot, but I'm also very lucky that one of my close friends does photography on the side and she will take pictures of us in exchange for babysitting or a gift card. I would definitely see if your DH or a friend could take some for you to save money, but to also document this time.
