We rent our home and recently had some water damage due to a leaking (more like gushing!) hot water heater. It's been an ongoing issue since mid-December trying to find exactly what the problem was and our landlords (who are great!) brought in repairmen multiple times to fix the issue.

Turns out the issue was bigger than everyone originally thought and it burst a few weeks ago while we were out to dinner flooding about 30% of our carpet. They had the hot water fixed (for good!) the next day, but the carpet was still wet and obviously needed to be handled by professionals.

They brought out a cleaning company who had to pull up our carpet, rip out the pads below and run five huge fans 24/7. Also, since the walls had begun to wick up some water they poked holes in the wall to run air through them, too. That took 2 1/2 days and we had to stay with my in-laws during that time although *technically* we could have stayed home but it was super loud and all of our furniture was pushed against walls. NOW they've found out that they have to replace the carpet that was wet (it became discolored) and are going to just re-do ALL the carpet in the living room, dining room, hallway and one bedroom. Our house has been in disarray for a few weeks now and we'll have to move all the furniture out of those areas while they work.

Should we ask for some sort of discount on rent? They haven't offered and DH is pretty upset about it all. I was fine with everything until we found out that we'd have to move all of our furniture to replace the carpet. I'm not sure how I should go about asking, what would you say?
