If you can't actually show me, describe it to me! One level, two tier, sink, prep sink, dishwasher, stove, oven, microwave, beverage fridge, cabinets, barstools... I wanna know it all

We have a large butcher block that my MIL made. If our kitchen was a little more square it would be the island. Instead it's in the breakfast nook. I want to make sure our next kitchen is big enough that it can be an island!

We have a large-ish island, it has a solid granite top with an overhang on 3 sides although the 2 ends aren't quite enough to keep chairs there but if we have people over we can easily pull them up. There is only access on one side, there are 2 drawers and then 4 cabinet doors to access the one large compartment. It has a half shelf running the length of it. We keep 2 bar stools at the counter but 3 would be comfortable.

in our new apartment, we are getting a large island, 3 cabinets wide, 2 cabinets deep. no sink or anything in it, just electrical (one of the cabinets will hold a pull-out freezer). There will be a 9-12" overhang on the 2 sides that don't face the kitchen area, so we can have 4 or 5 barstools (3 on the long side, 1 or 2 on the short one).

@snowjewelz: nice!!! What kind of counter top is that?
We have a 3'x8' with a open bookcase at one end for cookbooks. Base cabinets all around, Quartz counter. Secondary prep sink with a extendable gooseneck faucet.
You've already seen a pic. .

Our island has a sink (we use it for food prep. It is topped with a butcher block. Has cabinets 3 cabinets and 2 drawers. The only thing I don't like about it is it is where the microwave is stored as well. We don't really use it that often but the kids used to press the buttons a lot. They're better about it now.

@locavore_mama: haha I was too lazy to describe and found these on the iPad from when we first moved in! It's quartz!

We have this one from Ikea, except with a granite top.

I like it because it stores all my cookbooks, a lot of my baking supplies, and a big basket with a lot of our doggie supplies. On the other side, we have 2 counter height bar stools. It's great to have the extra counter space too.

This is ours - it's good sized (about 8' x 4') with granite countertop, 2 levels. I would love to have a prep sink, but we don't really have a need for one either; and we have a large farmhouse sink too which helps. Right now LO's play area is one one end of the island (shelves under the island overhang), when she gets older we'll transform that space to a homework zone with bar stools. Along the long side of the island we built in a bookcase for cookbooks.

@yoursilverlining: how do you like the 2 levels? Are you able to use the top level for prep, even though you don't have barstools yet? I'm picturing being able to use that top level for placing things on as you prep even if you are working from the shorter side.

I have a smaller one that my husband built. It is 3x4 feet when completely open, and 2x4 feet when the leaf is folded down. We keep two barstools at it. It has an oiled bamboo top, two drawers, a large enclosed cabinet with 2 shelves that slide out on one half, while the other half has a wine glass rack over two open shelves. It is on two wheels so we can move it around as needed, but it can be really heavy and hate to move it too much. It is really perfect for our small apartment!

@mrs. wagon: I like the 2 levels. I do use the space for prep when cooking and when we have guests over we put snacks up there and people usually stand at the island and chat and snack. The upper level is a great height for standing at the “bar” and talking to someone while they cook. It’s also nice because you can move everything off the main/lower level and put it on the top level so you have a big old workspace if you need it.

@yoursilverlining: that's a great point. I was kinda hesitant at the idea of the 2 levels but I'm liking the idea more and more, rather than just one big island surface. I feel like that would just get cluttered up.
